Disputing charges-can they collect?

Question: I have been disputing a monthly charge on my visa bill for six or so months through the bank. When I call the merchant doing the charges, they have no record of me in their accounts.

Anyhow, I have been disputing using Visa-today, I called to check on the status of the latest dispute, and was told by the card issuer that the merchant is saying that they are not refunding, because they are collecting on this account. Of particular interest, I have noticed that the vendor, not the card issuer, has credited back the account for amounts specified.

So my question is : can a merchant come after you to collect after you have gone through the process of disputing the charge with the card issuer? Thanks.

P.S.- I have received no mail correspondence from anyone in terms of attempting to collect on these credited charges.

What kind of charges? You need to give more details.

There was a charge from a vitamin company each month for 76.00 on my card.

I called the company, they searched by name, address, phone # and had no record of me in their records.

Am I understanding this question correctly?
Say I dispute a $50 merchant charge on a credit card and the credit card company charges the merchant back the $50 and credits my account can the merchant then try to collect the $50 from me?
    Is this what you're asking?

Call your credit card company and get a NEW ACCOUNT NUMBER TODAY!!! Problem solved...

You MUST also cancel with the VITAMIN COMPANY AGAIN!!! (EVEN IF THEY HAVE NO RECORD OF YOU)...paper trail

And do it all in writing, especially the cancellation!

Does the credit card company have anything with an alleged account number from the vitamin company?

Yes that was the question-I dispute the charge through the bank. The bank investigates. The vitamin company credits my account back the money.

Can they then come after me again via collection if they didn't follow the dispute procedure of the bank/card and credited my account?

I know that seems kind of ridiculous, but you know how these things go...

And I already have cancelled the card and received a new #.

The charges have stopped incurring on my account.

I have wondered this many times but have never seen anyone have this issue so don't know what a definite answer would be.
It would appear that the merchant could come after you since they did not get the money from the credit card company.
