I have read several times to go through an item and pick it apart. What about creditor classification with equifax. This particular item is listed as rental/leasing when it is not. How do I dispute an item classification? I am assuming I would be using the mail in dispute option because online dispute options are so limited. If the item is incomplete can/should we dispute? I have an item reporting that the date of first delinquency was 5/2008 when the account was closed 12/07. Thanks for advice.
The classification is not something you can change on your end by disputing. This is something the creditor did when they initially signed up with the CRA. I believe that will remain that way indefinitely unless someone catches and corrects it on their end. Writing is better cause you can send the dispute in certified mail, return receipt requested. Track the days they have to complete the investigation just in case they fail to respond in time. It is 30 days plus 5 for mail time. If you don't hear back from them in time just send out a letter asking for completion of the dispute. Do you have any statements showing when the account initially defaulted. I would include a copy of that statement. Even if you don't have it dispute that the first delinquency date is wrong and you want it corrected or removed from the credit report.
I would definitely dispute the account type. You can do it by saying "I never had a rental/leasing contract with XYZ Company." That's what they're supposed to verify. If the creditor doesn't verify that information, it should be deleted.
its actually... It is actually Cirro Energy saying I owe them. It is listed as a rental/lease and their is no way I rented or leases property from them.
Then that's exactly what I'd say in a dispute letter--you've never had a lease/rental agreement with them.
