Do you have to have a report number to dispute with Experian or can you just send them a letter?

I know you need a report number to call in or do an online dispute, so I'd imagine you'd need one for a write in as well.

    Anyone else?

Well that sucks then!! It will take up to a week or more to get a copy of their report via mail. Grrr.

    AT LEAST!

BTW, how long did it take you to reach those scores?

I only have two derogatories on my report...2 late payments from 3 years ago and a state tax lien that I am disputing. I just started this credit thing so I guess you can say that those scores took me 9 years to get :) I have just started on the journey to getting them higher by dealing with the above 2 derogatories.

I found this site b/c I am helping my friend fix his credit. His scores are in the very low 500s.

Anyone else disputed Experian by mail w/o a report number?

Why would you want to dispute until you've seen the report? Or have you seen it? If not, you don't know exactly how they are reporting, or exactly what is on there. You should definately wait to get the report, and report number, before you start a dispute, so you know exactly what you are dealing with!

He has a three month old copy of his Experian report and also a copy of his 3 in 1 report.

Wait, I'm confused. Is this dispute for him or for you? If it's for him, he already has a report number on the other reports, right? I was under the impression that you were disputing your 2 derogs, and it was your report you were waiting for.

Personal reply to vanili: May I say that its taken some time to find the humor <and I mean that kindly> in your posts. Most often I go thru three phases when reading your post.Inevitablly in this precise order: 1- the Huh look...then comes the comprehension phase which inevitably leads to the Marty Feldman look of complete confusion. Whilst this may not have answered your original post I just wanted to share what a joy you bring to the message board. I wish you the best in finding adequate answers here :)

Sorry for the confusion. I disputed mine online. He can't access his online. I thought Experian says that you can't use a credit report more than 90 days old. Therefore, I was hoping to get letters to Experian out for him based on the 3 in 1 report info b/c it will take a long time to get the report from Experien in the mail since he has to mail all kinds of ID and then wait for them to get back to him.

Tayla...thanks for getting the humor :) Most people don't get my humor or my sarcasm!

Oh, in that case I would just use his old number. Mine is a little over 90 days, and I used that number for my last dispute, and got a deletion!! sorry for the confusion!
