I applied, and was approved, for a Dell personal account. I plan on using it to make a purchase and pay it off with the first billing statement. I figure it's an extra R1 on my reports. Has anyone ever purchased a Dell desktop and what do you think of the product? The interest rates some computer companies charge are ridiculous. So, I suggest if you decide to open an account with any of these companies (ie. Dell, Gateway, Sony, Apple, Toshiba and etc.), make sure you have an exit strategy before their rate takes affect. I am on my 3rd Dell, DH is on his 2nd. We've never had any problems. We were just changing an older model for a new one. Good tech support. Now they have a nifty web site where they log your purchase with codes and all, and from there you can access a variety of options if you need help. Definitely worth the money in my opinion. PawMix
For a PC, I think Dell is the way to go. Since this isn't the appropriate board, I won't argue which is better an Apple or PC, but I do have have a dell laptop and have had two dell desktops and I have never had any troubles at all. Their recent computers are great! I haven't purchased a dell product for since 2000.
Thanks, PawMix. It sucks that I would have to wait up to 12 weeks to get a $100 rebate. It should be instant. I guess this helps Dells cash flow in more ways than one. CardKid
One bad side...unless things have changed, Dell Financial Services/CIT do not report monthly to the credit bureaus.
Thanks, Eriq. Do you the think the package for $449 is a good deal considering what you get? I use a Sony Vaio laptop and would love to have the option of using a desktop when I'm home. It would be used for general stuff such as surfing the web, sending email, using MS Money and other basic computer stuff. CardKid
As another point, HPShopping.com has similar prices. Their credit is by Household (the rebuilder's best buddy) who DOES report monthly.
I've gone to many PC sites (including my favorite - Sonystye.com). No one comes close to Dell's $449 deal (PC, 17" monitor, digital camera, printer and free shipping). Thanks for everyone's feedback. "I'm getting a Dell." CardKid
LOL. I bounced the idea off of my daughter. She asked me if I prefer a little luxury with my debt. That speaks volumes to her maturity at age 12. Now, I'm on the fence. I'm holding off for now. The Vaio works fine. The screen is only 14" and I prefer a larger viewing area. I priced flat panels which made me want to freeze my credit cards in a block of ice. I also looked at regular CRTs. The prices were good, but they take up more space than I'm willing to give up - for the money. Besides, they will probably go on sale the day after Thanksgiving. Maybe Dell will run an even better special on that day, as well. We'll see. Thanks again for everyone's input. CardKid
I've owned HP, Sony, Gateway, Dell. Dell has excellent customer service and great products. Purchased through Dell Financing recently. They are reporting my account on Experian only. Tradeline shows as revolving account with original purchase amount as high balance instead of actual credit limit. Good luck with your purchase! gilmores
I know you have decided to wait, but when you do decide to buy a Dell just watch their website. They run different specials all the time. The specials seems to be better around Christmas though. I own four Dells and they run flawlessly. Good Luck, Michelle
DELL LAPTOP I don't like because my son doesn't bother to give me the MOUSE when he lets us borrow it.... WITH A MOUSE I ASSUME I WOULD LIKE IT... THAT TOUCH AND DRAG AND MOUSE PADS...KINDA' CONFUSING...
I have a dell desktop computer. Got their preferrred account and paid it off. The interest rate sucked and they NEVER reported my account to any credit bureau. Seems they only report if you are late.
I love my Dell! Wouldn't dream of EVER buying anything else. They didn't report at first but when I called to make a payment and mentioned it they took care of it and started reporting. I love my Dell!
I'm on my 2nd Dell. First was a desktop, liked it good model with a good price. I got the Dell installation loan, paid it off last fall. I got a laptop this summer only because my "office" at the house got turned into the baby's room and my "office" got moved to the basement. Couldn't stand being away from the baby and in the dark, cold basement. The laptop is nice, a bit heavy but it doesn't really leave the house. Dell approved me for a Perferred Account $1,500 I'm about 2 payments away from paying it off. No problems with the laptop, yet. Dell reports to my Experian and Equifax. They reported to TU for about 3 months and then it went bye-bye. As Meatloaf sang.. "Two out of three ain't bad" Good luck
I hate to burst the "dell is great" bubble, but I have had nothing but problems with them. My friends and relatives that use them have too. My first problem was the whole rebate things. I mailed the form certified so I knew when they got it and could prove they did. 4 months later, I still didn't have a refund and they said they never received the paperwork. I filed a complaint and got the Better Business Bureau to contact them and they finally knocked $100 off my loan through them. I never did get a refund check though. Now I am fighting with them because they say I am past due even though I have my cashed check to prove I am not. They cashed my payment but didn't credit it to my account and that was back in April. I sent them copies of the check and they still won't credit the payment and are now reporting late on my credit report!! I could go one but I won't take up anymore space.
for a dell account, who do they pull from, are they BK friendly, I had a chapter 13 BK, 6 good tradelines and scores in the mid 600s. do I have a chance?
Wow, you really must have a dark cloud following you around - I've had several problems with Dell over the years, all of which were corrected very much to my satisfaction. I've had two laptops, one had a screen problem in warranty - I called at 2 p.m., Airborne was at my door 2 hours later to pick it up, the next morning I get a call at 8 a.m. saying one problem was fixed, but a second issue needed clarification - I got it back the follwing day by 10 a.m. I too had problems with 1 rebate after 10 weeks, with their rebate company... a short note to Cathy at the Dell Rebate Forum, and I had a check in hand within 5 days, not only for the 1 preoblem rebate, but also two others I had just submitted in the two weeks before. I made a mistake on a server I bought - forgot to click the box for "standard keyboard" - I offered to pay the extra $30 since it was my own fault but they sent me one for free; unofrtunately it was the wrong one (wireless); they said "keep it" and sent me the right one also. I financed a bunch of stuff with Dell Financing Services to get the "60 days same as cash" deal, as well as a 2% discount... unfortunately, I didn't realize there was no "pay online" capability when I called them up the day before the last day I could pay with no charges, and they extended the due date by 5 days to allow me to mail it in instead of using the $10 "pay-by-phone" process. I usually buy their computers with the cheapest hard-drive/memory etc, then replace it with cheaper (yet larger) drives/memory etc from other places... when one of these systems failed, they said no problem with warranty, just make sure I removed the non-Dell stuff before I sent it back, so they could guarantee that the Dell stuff was or was not the problem - they have no "warranty void if opened" issues like Compaq or eMachines. I ordered a 200GB hard drive for $240 that had a $100 rebate; a couple days later I noticed that there was a second $100 rebate that also appeared to be valid. It did take a while, but within a couple weeks they came up with a plan to make sure everyone who even placed an order during those three days, whether or not they noticed it, received $200 rebate... I mean, the drive hadn't even shipped yet (they were out of stock), my credit card had never been charged, and they still honored the rebate! Yes I get somewhat irritated with their customer service in India, and the plethora of phone numbers/depts/extensions of people to talk to is staggering and frustrating to deal with... but since I started writing down every person's name and number and ask questions about "is this the correct dept" before spending much time discussing my needs, the frsutration level has gone way down. Currently I have 2 Dell laptops, one more on the way, and more Dell desktops, servers and workstations than I can keep track of (I think 4 servers, 1 workstation, 4 desktops, 7 PDAs, and several switches and routers - no I'm not with a big company, this is for 2 small companies employing 9 people.) And I'll be buying more.
