I want to send Pac Bell a validation letter regarding an old debt, but can't seem to find their mailing address online. When I search for it, it sends me to SBC site. Does anyone know if Pac Bell has become SBC and if so, do I send a validation letter to SBC or who? thanks in advance. This site in invaluable.

My statements stopped saying Pac Bell and started saying SBC about 6 months to a year ago.

Pac Bell and SBC are same company. SBC pretty much took over all of Pac Bell. Send the request to SBC directly.

SBC purchased Pacific\Nevada Bell roughly 7 years ago. They recently were able to change to SBC Global. I used to work for them, great company actually

Does this mean that I owe the new company, SBC payment now? Or since the original debt was with Pac Bell 5.5 years ago, should I just dispute with CRA as "not mine" ? Will they be able to verify if Pac Bell has changed names?

    thanks.

This sounds like one that could be beyond the SOL. 5.5 yrs is beyond the sol in CA which is in SBC territory. Im not sure which other states SBC acquired through Pac Bell I know my Washington home and offices are covered by Qwest, not sure who carries western Oregon. Anyway I would check into your state's SOL and if outside of SOL dispute the debt with SBC then dispute it with the CRA... if they validate with the CRA and not with you you have a violation and can sue as a means for deletion.

However... You may want to wait for the veterans of the board to chime in.

Do you mean that an OC has a SOL? Does this mean that an OC cannot try to collect on debt older than 5.5 years? I have been working on cleaning up my credit report and rebuilding my credit for a couple of months now, and haven't heard of this until now. I was under the impression that a CA has a SOL of 4 years. Is this right?

If my debt was originally with Pac Bell (I'm in California) is SBC automatically entitled to it now? I didn't have an agreement with SBC.

Also, you mentioned that a OC/CA cannot validate to a CRA without validating it to me. Does this also apply when one disputes a claim with a CRA as an account "not mine" and it comes back verified? This recently happened and the CA hasn't replied yet to my validation request (hasn't quite reached 30 days).

Thank you for taking time to help me understand this...geesh, it's so confusing! I think someone could make millions offering a tutoring course on everything that this website offers!

    Lisae,

It is not the type of collection, whether OC or CA, it is rather the type of contract...ie open contract (such as a credit card), closed contract (installment loan), or a judgment, etc...that determines the SOL.

You can determine your SOL, in your home state, by looking for Why Chat's website....he has a great site that has links to SOL information.

Thank you. I sent Pac Bell/SBC a validation letter over 30 days ago and recently disputed with CRA. I have not received my green card back from Pac Bell yet, so either they've not signed for it or it is an outdated address. I guess I will just wait for a result from Trans Union on the disputed TL. Am I doing the right thing?

    thanks for your help.
