Hey all - here is my DSL email address if you want -
    rwb4dsl@pacbell.net.

I just saw my latest statement from AOL with BYOA DSL - it was $193.10 - the majority of charges from using their internet access to creditnet.

I will log on as often as is possible - but I need to talk with Norton and Microsoft to see WHY I cannot get to several sites except thru AOL.

Hell that bill is a large part of my car payment...
At $200 per month for AOL access, I could buy and pay for a new DELL laptop with dialup in 4 months....

I still cannot access FCNB, creditnet, NOW PACIFIC BELL-SBC. But I can reach those sites IF I USE AOL...

    any ideas would be appreciated

WHEN I SIGN ON AOL IT SAYS ISP/LAN Connection.

$23.90 IS UNLIMITED "DIAL-UP" SO THERE IS NO WAY YOU SHOULD EVEN EXCEED THAT...

$14.95 BYOA comes with 2 hours credit for DIAL-UP if needed like when I was on VACATION...

It may be helpful to know exactly what happens when you can't get access to site. Do you get a page that says, "Could not connect to server or DNS error followed by a error code?

    I know, I know.........

I fixed a similar situation for someone last month. AOL could access the internet, IE6 got the same error, check browser security settings.

After a couple of useless reinstalls of IE6, I figured out that their firewall software was blocking the use of IE6 to access the Internet. (When I downgraded to IE5.5, it worked) They were using Zone Alarm Firewall software. My best guess is that the firewall software, questions you when you run a new program that access web services, asking if it should allow access. Somebody upgraded to IE6 and inadvertently clicked to not allow access.(or the settings became corrupt, not sure I use a hardware firewall).

I found where the security setting were set for the firewall and REMOVED/DELETED the IE6 settings(just setting them to "allow" DID NOT work). Next time I started IE6 zone alarm asked if it should allow access, and I told it yes. Works like a charm.

Check your Norton Internet Security, I bet you will find the problem(you can always just disable norton for a test)

    Good Luck...

Just wait till you get your August September and November bills...it is NOT as easy to cancel AOL as it is to sign up. I had a friend that was billed for 6 months after he had cancelled, and it took a barrage of CSR calls to correct...watch closely Dawg.

    Bark at 'em.

    Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrf, and as always...Peace, Nave

PS, Still workin on that dratted security problem huh...you'll get it soon I hope. Good Luck.

I will deal with them tomorrow - paper in hand to document the call.

    later - dogman

apparently, this high billing goes back at least one month on FCNB - they hit me for $200.

I will request all FCNB statements and these dogs can explain to me why I pay 10X the going rate - what do I get - and I will get a refund and explanation.

I'm betting it's not Norton. It's XP. I had the same problem a month ago when I asked if anyone knew if TU was down. I could access it fine from work and not from home. Update your Windows XP software (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com). Between that, clearing my cache and setting my security in IE6 to normal, I was able to access it. Once I got into TU once, I changed the security settings back and haven't had a problem since.

Symptoms: Browser finds URL, and beings loading web page.. but very slowly and never seems to load the entire page. If you hit stop, you get a small porton.

Possible Fix: Make sure that XP is up to date as possible. Change IE6 security settings to minimal. Clear Cache and temp files. Possibly Reboot as well. (clears out the rest of the junk) Login. Load DSL (I have pacbell DSL too) and then try connecting. If it works, click around a few times and then reset the security settings in IE6. Make sure your Norton Firewall allows access again and you should be okay.

I'm trying to think off hand of everything I did to get mine to work. If I went through Netscape, it didn't work either. That's what tipped me off to an IE6/XP problem.

AOL doesn't refund, they "credit". We'll give you 500 million years of free service, Mr. Darkdoj. We are sorry you're having problems with our messed up service, and we can't do anything about it, but we'll give you free service and then charge you next month like normal, just so you can call back again and get 500 million more free years of service.

    The AOL cycle never changes.

    CREDIT ONLY???

    ~13 MONTHS...NO CHARGE (already paid)

I can't see them REFUSING to credit your credit card...

(before i go to bed.) Had the same thing happen to me today, but of course i used my usual tactics. Asked to speak to dept. manager, not supervisor. told them i'd like to stay on, but if they don't credit my CREDIT CARD, first i will tell CC company, it is a fraudulent charge, and switch over to NetZero which is 1/2 the price. Recieved 4 free months and credit to CC. You might want to ask them how their stock is doing as well ;)

    cash,

Do you think you had to remove IE6 from Zone Alarm instead of allowing it only because it had been disallowed in the first place when first running Zone Alarm?

If you're just downloading Zone Alarm for the first time, can you make sure to allow IE6 the first time around and have things go smoothly - or do you need to uninstall IE6, reinstall it, and then allow it on ZA?

    Meaning...

I have a new pc with Windows XP Professional. I have enabled the internal XP firewall, and I think my cable modem has some type of internal firewall as well. I still want to install the free Zone Alarm - but I don't want to uninstall IE6 if I can help it.

It is my understanding that if you install Zone Alarm - the three important things to do right off the bat is:

    1. allow "services and controller applications".

    2. allow "generic host process for Win32 services access". (what does this mean???)

    3. allow for IE6.

    Didi I miss anything?

    Thanks,
