    Who can I complain to if a (Mortgage) company runs my credit report without my authorization? What penalties can be brought against them (if any). I found out through the CRA who this company is and I never gave them authorization to run a credit report.
    Thanks!

    They may not have pulled a complete report, just the partial one. They can do that for certain pre-approved offers and such, and the only way to prevent it is by contacting the CRA's and opt-out.

    If you've already opted out, write them (CRRR) and ask them what their PP was.

    Have you recently been talking to one or more mortgage brokers? Did you have any contact with them, or none at all?

    As suggested above, was the inquiry "promotional", or was it a "hard" inquiry seen by others and affecting your score?

    Hey this letter, it worked great for me!! Don't remember where I got it.

    Today's Date
    Your Full Name
    Current Address
    Current Phone Number
    Attention: {Creditor's Name}
    Credit Department
    Creditor's Address
    Dear {Creditor's Name}
    This letter is your formal notice to cease your unauthorized hard inquiries into my credit report and, a formal demand that you immediately contact the credit reporting agencies and credit bureaus, where your organization has made inquiries into my credit history, to have your illegal inquiries removed. Be advised that I will be checking my reports to ensure you have had the following unauthorized inquiries removed:
    Line Item {insert number}:
    Made by: {insert name of company or person making the inquiry
    Made on: {insert date of inquiry}
    Made with: {insert name of credit reporting agency}
    To my knowledge, I have not signed any documents authorizing your organization to view my credit history therefore, your inquiry into my credit report violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act, Section 1681b(c): Transactions Not Initiated by Consumer.
    If you are in possession of any document that you believe authorizes you or your organization to make inquires into my credit report, I respectfully request a copy of this document be sent to my address listed above so that I may verify its validity. Given the amount of identity theft, I'm sure you'll agree that verifying your information is in your best interest.
    Finally, assuming you do not posses inquiry authorization, I request that, after removing your unauthorized inquires from my credit profiles, you also remove all of my personal information from your records and send me confirmation that you have complied with my requests.

    Sincerely,

    Signature
    Printed Name

    Now you need to know the differance between a hard copy and a soft copy. A hard copy is a complete copy of your credit. A soft copy is just basically limited information on you and a soft copy doesn't count against you. A hard copy hurts your credit rating!!! It tells other creditors that your appling for credit.You don't need to have any hard pulls on your credit unless you apply for a line.
    There is a site you can go to that will opt you out of the practive of selling your information. Yes the big three sells your information, but if you opt out they can't do this to you. Anyway I thought I would give you my impute and I better hush now. Hope this help you. GL to you.
