I just reviewed my TU report. It has my Provd. TL reported twice. Slight differences, as one is more current than the other by 5 weeks.

My question is if I dispute this will this affect my score in a positive way. This is the last of my TL that has a high balance. So my overall balance is overstated by 6k.

It looks like the second account has not been updated since Aug and the current one was updated last Sept.

    Best regards,
    Mirage

Are the tradelines in the positive section of the report, or the negative section of the report?

If in the positive section, a general rule is to never dispute a positive tradeline. However, this may be a good enough exception to the rule. In which case I would dispute only the older unupdated tradeline to TU as a duplicate of the newer updated tradeline.

If they're both in the negative, I'ld dispute both of them as a duplicate of each other... :)

I had exactly the same thing with my Equifax report last week, coincidentally it was also Providian.

I have a visa with them with a credit line of $1,500 - it has two years positive history.

Here's how it affected my score:

    Thursday 10/16/2003 - reported correctly - balance $1,001 - FIC0 - 676

    Friday 10/17/2003 - reported twice - entry as above and a previous month of $1,328 - FICO - 666

Monday 10/21/2003 - called Equifax to dispute - they deleted (both entries) - FICO - 719

Thanks for the response. Yes both are positive TL and my 2nd oldest post bk. I would have left it as such if not that I think the 2nd one has stopped reporting leaving me with a TL with a high balance.

I think it involves "percentage of credit utilization" - the lower the ratio, the higher your score. If they have high balances, you want them off, if they are low leave them on!

Neil, yeah it's up there as I am pretty close to maxing out. 6500/6900. It's the last one as I paid off my other high one and saw my score jump 16 pts. on EX-CE.

TU and EQ has yet to report this. Currently my TU is 681 with the duplicate account. Will report the results as the TU rep. related that she will delete the second one.

    Best regards,

okay, just pulled my TU report and with deletion of the duplicate Provd account, 6500/6900. My score went up 8 pts. (current score 689). Hopfully when the other card that I paid off hits this report my score will be over 700.

Funny, I would think deleting a positive TL would have dropped my score.

Also the TU rep related that the error occured because Providian reported twice in Aug. I checked my other two reports and it's reported correctly.

    Best regards,
    Mirage
