I am driving from NH to Florida July 3rd and I need your help.

I will be going 95 the whole way, but I was wondering if there are any major construction(s) going on in any of the east coast states (95), so that maybe I could find an alternate route and avoid it.

    Thanks guys and gals!

    KHM,

I foresee two problems when you're coming through Virginia. Interstate 95 merges with 495 (the Beltway around Washington DC). When you reach the 95 exit, heading toward Richmond, there is the Springfield Mixing Bowl project. If you can, stay away from it between 6AM-9AM and 4PM-7PM. This is when traffic is the worst because everyone is coming and going from their jobs. There is usually some small congestion during the day, but not so bad. At night (after 7PM) the traffic moves pretty quick.

Problem #2 - actually a suggestion. Before you reach Richmond take I-295 (toward Rocky Mount, NC) as an alternative. It loops around the city and you don't have to deal with the traffic congestion in downtown Richmond. Interstate 295 starts around exit 90? on 95 in Virgina and goes 45 miles so you merge back onto 95 around exit 45 or 46 (45-46 miles) from the Virginia border.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

PS I just took 95 from Fredericksburg, VA to the SC border a week ago. No problems at all in NC.

    Dani-
Thank you! We are leaving NH at about 10pm which would put us in DC around 8am. Maybe we'll leave a little later :)

    Thanks again!

I drive through there on my way to Nags Head. :) I noticed the construction taking place on Interstate 64, what a mess. The bridge was so backed up, last time I drove there that I took the alterative route down I-264? (it loops around Hampton Roads and then takes you through the tunnel into Newport News). I can't believe how much that place has grown. All the new shops and stores going in..it has changed quite a bit in recent years.

You know it didn't dawn on me until the other day, but we are leaving the 3rd at 11pm. So we will be going through all these states on the fourth of july. HOPEFULLY, there wont be horrid traffic at these construction sites, considering the holiday.

28 hours in a Honda, with a cranky hubby, a 3 year old and a 4 year old, PRAY FOR ME :)

I drive the I95 trip on a regular basis as I grew up in S. Fla and still have friends and family there. I live in PA now but not far from the NJ border.

The worst spot on the whole drive is around the D.C. area...hopefully there won't be the usual commuter traffic around the beltway on the 4th.

    Have a fun vacation...couldn't imagine travelling with 2 babies in tow...but I'm old ;=}.

    KHM,

If possible try to leave earlier, at least get through DC before 9-10AM. There will be no commuter traffic since everything is closed, but you're going to run up against all the incoming traffic coming into the city to see the fireworks display. I also have a feeling there will be security checkpoints, because of the focus on terrorist threats. As long as you get through DC before lunch there should be no problem.

    Dani-
Hey thanks! I'm actually following my parents down and we talked about it last night, we decided to leave as soon as DH gets out of work (9pm). We figure it takes 4 hours to get to NYC, so by 9 am we will be long past DC.

I'm bringing my laptop to check into CN, even though my hubby offered me $100 to stay away from this site for 2 weeks....HAHAHA yeah right! Although that would cover my CW and part of CE....hmmmm

I am in Norfolk, if you want to swing by, I'll give you free coffee ;)

Seriously, it would be out of your way by a lot of miles!!

The 295 bypass around Richmond is great.

For those who go to Nags Head, listen, I64 has been under construction there for 30 years. Take the 464 (alternate) route and avoid the tunnel. There are big signs for Nags Head. And honk when you go by, I'll wave, hehe.
