What is the best way to deal with disclosing a bankruptcy during the interview/hiring process for a new job? For anyone who has been through this, can you offer any advice on the best ways to explain the situation to the employer so they don't balk?
Just my opinion but I do think you do not have to offer that type of information. If they check your credit they will find out soon enough but they have to have your permission to do so. Employers are prohibited according to law from discriminating against anyone who has filed BK for that reason alone. If they ask point blank in the interview which is unlikely, you can say you have had financial problems in the past but you have been offered a legal fresh start and you have proven yourself financially responsible since the BK. Of course it is a plus if the BK was caused by medical or another reason beyond your control. Try to turn it into a strength and a learning experience.
