OOOOOOH, DAVE... LOL... you've arrived. And now you're faced with the big decision -- whether the added-value aspects of the card provide more benefit than the $395 will. Or, perhaps, consider whether those premium benefits provide more benefit than at least SOME or MUCH of that $395 (which I remember used to be $250 and will undoubtedly climb over the next few years at about $20-35 more per year).

On the other hand, that $395 may be worth the fun of presenting that puppy. :)

If it was me, I wouldn't do it. On the other hand, I wish they'd invite me for the AmEx Centurion Black at $395, and I might do that, LOL.

I'm anxious to know what you decide, hehe. :)

You know -- I'm giving it some serious thought. I try to concentrate most of my frequent flyer miles on Delta and just two or three flights a year where I could sit in the Crown Room instead of in the food court might justify the fee.

This is agonizing. On one hand I REALLY want this card. On the other hand, I sure would feel like a sucker once a year when i was writing that $395 check.

BTW, Doc... I don't think you can be invited to get the Black if you don't get the Platinum... :)

    Wow congrats Dave:)

You may also get the invite by mail, I have gotten them in the past and they are quite impressive. Tissue paper and an embossed envelope with silver trim.

I accepted the offer, but I was very very tempted.

Of course if you need the platinum to one day get the black, even more temptation LOL

They have been inviting me for the Platinum for years and for years I have turned them down, but it is all about the benefits against the cost, not for me. I am not interested in the prestige of showing the card, to me it is all about how much cash I can use from a card, not what it looks like.

It's tough... I'm not going to deny I'm interested in flashing it around town but I really would use things like the Starwood Gold Preferred, the airport club access and the rental car upgrades. I just don't know if those things would be worth $395. I imagine the first time a flight was delayed and I was curled up on a comfy couch instead of leaning against a plastic chair I'd figure it out.. :)

    I'm leaning towards upgrading.

    Dave,
I got the same offer as well. It was easy for me to delete the email - no way I am paying $395 just to use the card. I hate paying the 130 or 150 for the gold. Maybe when I finish grad school and get a job, but right now, no way.

    DaveLV,

Anywhere as long as it gets me away from my current address. My PMB plan is not working. LOL Rome would be nice.

Actually, I'm planning on Italy this year. Another reason it might be nice to get that shiny new card... There's some pretty good specials from Vegas.

Now that there are so many plat cards out there, the card itself doesn't get much attention when you present it. There is no way I would pay simply for perceived status (now Black would be another story!)

However, IMHO, the annual fee is worth it for the following benefits 1) Starwood Gold (free room upgrades!)2) the new, cool, entrance to Crown Rooms 3) Hertz Gold 4) improved customer service.

But no normal person in the world outside creditnet knows what a black card is, Centurion bank doesn't want that.... all people know is that it is something they have never seen before.... If you have this card it is not about prestige... it is about upgrades, companion tickets, concierge, and after hours private shopping.
