Is it legal to have the same account listed three times by three separate companies? The original creditor and 2 different collection agencies? If not, which one is correct and how can I dispute the other(s)?
Having the same debt listed multiple times is not accurate. If a debt is sold to another party then the original creditor or source should only list it as sold or transfered. The new owner of the debt needs to list the last activity dates and account information the same as the original owner. Collection agencies often change the last date of activity or first charged off date in an attempt to extend the reporting time. Challenge this!
