I am so sorry about the duplicate post. I hit reply but received a server error message; I guess that's why there's no text in the message.

    Hi all -

Long-time lurker, 1st time poster. Reading all the info here has helped me start repairing my own credit and I'd like to say a big thanks to everyone here for that.

While repairing my own credit, I'm also helping my husband to build his. He moved here from Europe and only received his SS# 2 years ago.

I just pulled his report from PrivacyGuard and he has...

Equifax - shows score of 712 on PG
1 installment loan (auto, 12 mths, no lates) $5.5k high balance, $3k payoff
1 Macy's card (16 mths, no lates) $1k limit, $25 high balance, $0 current balance

    Experian
Only shows Macy's card - same info as EQ

    Transunion
Only shows Macy's card - same info as EQ

No hard inquiries on any report.

Our long-term goal is to qualify for a house (once my own credit is decent again) and to build a nice solid credit history for him. Because of my own crappy credit, I have no credit cards so I can't add him as an AU.

So where does he go from here? Another retail card, a gas card, could he qualify for a Visa or Delta AMEX? Any ideas on what types of credit he could apply for and receive (especially given his short credit history) would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help -- GreatCook

Re: Establishing New Credit - Next

With no negs I say Cap One, Providian will definitly approve. But before going pseudo sub prime I would suggest applying for a prime Visa/MC such as Bank of America or Citibank . . . possibly Discover Card. Don't do too much at once. I would say apply for one, either way if you get it or get refused, wait 2-3 months before anything else. If you get one of them, go for the gas card next, then 3-6 months after the gas card go for a second prime acct. Make sure you get balances on them, but not carry them. You'll want a low utilization if you apply for a second prime card.

I would also suggest (for the best balance) a gas card. Pick a gas station that is convienant to where you live / work so it can be something that you use on a regular basis. Make sure that the station is one that has the pay at the pump. Texaco, Shell, Chevron, and Citgo are pretty easy to get as long as you don't have major negatives.

    Hope this helps.
