Experian gave me wrong contact info

The fun never ends. There's a judgment on my file I'm trying to get rid of and Experian verified it in my first round of disputes and it remains on my record. So I called them and asked them for the contact phone number of the courthouse where they verified it. They happily give it to me.... and the phone number is WRONG!! I called back and asked for the same info and they gave me the same phone number so it's not like I didn't write it down correctly.

Should I call them and demand a deletion?

There are 2 things you could do. You could call and ask how they verified it when you can't reach the number that they gave you. Then demand (nicely) that they delete it. You might have to talk to a supervisor. Some have had good luck just by calling. If that doesn't work, then go to the next step.

Write and ask for the procedures that verified the judgment. The reasoning is that they had to verify it somehow and if the number that they gave you is not correct, how did they verify in the first place? They couldn't have called. It had to be some other way. Did they write a letter? Chances are no - did they verify it by tape? ummmm - fat chance for a judgment and they shouldn't be doing a reinvestigation from tape anyways.

The problem that you will probably run into is that Exp almost never sends the right procedures, they send a form letter. Then you might either have to sue or send a complaint to the FTC or your state's AG.

Other than the above, you could call Exp again and get the address for the courthouse. Then do the research for the number yourself. Frankly, Exp should have the correct information already.

Thanks. I called them and stated that the information they gave me was incorrect. The lady on the other line didn't seem to care -- she said "it worked for us, I'm sorry you're having problems." I tried to get more info. but she said that's all they had -- she claimed that if the phone number isn't correct they must have sent out a letter and it came back verified. The best I could do was get her to re-dispute the item as a "not mine" once more. I guess it's another 30 days of waiting for the result.

But what gets me is that she suggested I should investigate the matter myself and obtain a letter from the court stating that there is no said judgment against me. Uhm... what exactly is THEIR job then?!

What exactly does "getting the info from tape" mean?

Sorry to hear about your conversation. Ummm...it's THEIR job to make sure the information is correct when a consumer requests a reinvestigation. I would wait the 30 days and then if it comes back verified again, send a procedural request. I know it seems like a pita but credit repair can be a bumpy ride. Just hang in there and ppl here will help you on your way. *smile*

Getting info from tape means magnetic tape or electronically. Credit cards update information that way (ie balances, payments, etc.).
