what are the reasons why one cant view his/her credit report online and must request it by mail?

Couple I have seen here on the board:

    1) Report too long (usually this has been from excessive inquiries from one of the credit monitoring services that pulls a soft inq for every day it checks your report).

    2) Multiple reports for your name/ss#. If you have multiple reports due to some mix up, it will flag you so that you have difficulty getting your report on or offline.

    3) Fraud alert put on your file.

    4) You are entering in information that does NOT match your report. For instance on TU I can not get my report because I am not typing in EXACTLY what my report has for a balance or a limit, and it refuses to give me online view, makes me get hard copy. This happened to worthknowing the first time I tried that too.

I am sure there are plenty more reasons.
