FCNB holds on large payments

In previous posts, I wrote about how FCNB puts holds on payments of $1,000 or more. Well, I just learned something new about those holds.

The holds take place as soon as the payment is entered into the system, but your balance isn't updated until about 1 a.m. Pacific time.

What this means is that if your payment is larger than your available credit, you can't make any charges for about a half-day or so. For example, if you have a credit limit of $2,500, a balance of $1,500 and make a $1,250 payment, for at least a few hours, the FCNB system will think your available credit is a negative $250. After the computer updates your balance overnight, your available credit will return.
