My mother has a federal tax lien for $8000 from 1984. According to Federal Law there is a 20 year statute on federal tax liens. If after twenty years you do not make payment they must release you from owing any money. All is forgiven. Any unpaid tax liens whether state or federal unpaid remain on your record for 15 years. Paid tax liens are on your record for 7 years from the date paid. The twenty year period came up this year. They released her from all monies owing. Catch 22 is when you are released from any monies owing they mark your tax lien as paid. According to the credit bureau the 7 year mark starts from this year. How can she go about fighting this? She lived with this record for 15 years. Now it has reappeared on her credit bureau report and will be there another 7 years. I already disputed the tax lien with the credit bureau. It came back as verified. Remains. Any suggestions?
If she did not pay it then it is inaccurate to report it as paid. A better terminology might be it was released by action of law. (just my view on how you might go about arguing this point. I know it might be impossible when dealing with the feds)
It was released April 2003. The date the taxes were owed was 1983. It is only reporting to Experian. The other two do not have it on there. Disputed it a few weeks ago.
