This may not be the right forum for this question, but, here goes. I added my fiance to my health insurance as my domestic partner. She visited severral doctors and incurred expenses above the co-pay. She is not paying those expenses and now I'm receiving bills for them. Can I be held responsible for those bills?

It depends on your health insurance plan.

If your health insurance plan, and their agreement with the provider requires that the provider adjust the bill to only co-pay + the insurance company portion of the bill, then no.

If your health insurance plan, and their agreement with the provider doesn't, or the provider is an out-of-network provider, then chances are whatever is above the insurance company portion of the bill would be your responsibility.

I hope you plan to dump this chick. If she isn't paying her part now, imagine how bad she'll be down the road!

    Stang,

There is no way of knowing whether HE or SHE is responsible for the remainder.

IT DEPENDS ON WHAT THE PROVIDERS CONTRACT WITH THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS!

So your irresponsible comments are unwarrented.

Just because the provider sends a bill for the remainder of the balance left over after the insurance company pays, doesn't mean that the consumer is responsible for it.

Who knows if the person at the provider's office 'forgot' either accidentally or on purpose to perform their contractual adjustments of the balance?

This is what they need to discuss with their insurnace company.

I agree with jam. I had some bills from medical care after an auto accident. My company was willing to pay, but requested additional information from the provider (it was a physical therapist and they needed some of the notes, which seems to be normal).

My husband kept saying that I should go ahead and pay it. I steadfastly refused. If the provider can't fulfill his end so that my insurance would legitimately pay, he's not getting a red cent out of me.

The insurance company ended up caving and paying without the paperwork just to get them off my back!
