My Providian/Getsmart account has been closed due to its delinquent status. When I called to make inquiries about the account, I was transferred to "First Select" and the representative there began by telling me "the purpose of this call is to collect a debt, all info will be used for that purpose, etc." I'm unclear on whether FS is a debt collector, or simply a different department in Providian. If I'm not mistaken, based on what I've read here, the laws which apply to debt collectors will make a huge difference?

On a lighter note, I got my Paypal Visa current and under the limit. I called to ask if they would remove the $29 late fee, and then the representative tried to sell me a $129 travel protection plan! One of those triple-A type plans which covers you if you need roadside assistance, rental vehicle, accommodations, etc.

Here is a link I found:

    First Select

They are a wholly owned collections subsidiary of Providian.

Thanks for the link. I would presume that they are thus governed by FDCPA?
