hi One of my roommates about 2 years ago used my name and information to open 2 credit cards on my name. I didn't know about it till I pulled my credit report this year. There have been some late payments too. Now we are in different states and friend is still paying off those cards but my credit score is suffering. One of the credit cards is closed already but amount is still being paid. What should I do? Can I dispute with CA's since I didn't sign anything personally? Please help. thanks
That's not a friend. Contact the card companies and file a fraud complaint and then do the same with the local police. FAx the copy of the police report to the cc company and then cooperate with the investigation.
I am trying to avoid police investigation and all since friend is also a married to a distant family member. I read somewhere that I can dispute the info on CR as long as I can prove that I didn't sign anything or pay by personal check..
Sounds to me ss is trying to make everyone happy which is impossible. Someone must be responsible in such case and pay for it somehow.
Hey Breeze & LKH, You know where I keep my documents. Go ahead and apply for some credit cards and use it a lot. Later on I may claim you stole my documents. I am sure the bankers and the CRA's are going to forgive us and delete all the records. Good idea ha...
I guess my question is, "how did you know it was this individual who used your ID?" There's nothing on your credit report that tells you that, and you said you didn't find out about it til you checked your credit report. Actually, it's none of my business. But, if you knew about this when it happened, there are things you cannot do in your efforts to get it removed from your credit reports. You can get in trouble for that. That what it sounds like to me. Either you knew it, for some reason, before you ever saw your reports, or you even agreed to it. Stranger things have happened. But the point is, that you will get bad advice if you don't tell the whole story.
Everytime I hear a roomate gone bad story I remember something that happened while I was in college. I went through school on a football scholarship, back in the days of Athletic Dorms and the "dorm dad" assigned roommates. Well, we had this guy that would steal. Nobody wanted to rat him out so, they just requested a new roommate. This went on until about the mddle of my soph. year and the guy the thief was roomimg with reported it to the coaches and got the guy expelled. He told us later, the reason he told on the guy was it was just getting to be too much of a pain in the ass to take a shower and hold a bar of soap in one hand and his wallet inthe other hand.
Thanks everyone for their comments It showed that accounts were opened when I was staying with my roommates during the particualr time. I didnt know about who opened the cards until I saw the different addresses of residence/ business it lists. The address was for that person. I called and threatened to tell his wife. So he confessed that it is his fault , he needed the money and that he is paying the accounts. I never knew until now that he had opened the accounts or else I would have done something sooner. Now the balance is high and my score is down. I guess I will talk to him again and get him to pay sooner . Maybe get some elder family member involved. Thanks again everyone.
Ahhhhh, OK. Make him give you those cards. Don't close the account, IMO. I would make sure he paid it back, and then change the address back and keep the accounts.
