I have had GEICO auto insurance for years with no problems. Now that I have made the decision to file bankruptcy, I am concerned that they may use that as an excuse to raise my auto insurance rates. Should I shift the policy to my husband, or should I even worry? there is nothing on my reports to indicate that GEICO has ever pulled my report.
I have had GEICO for many years. There was a time that I considered filing bankruptcy, so I called them and asked them what effect it would have on my policy. They said that they did not use that type of information when renewing policies. I did not file, but my credit was so horrible at that time it was a wonder they ever insured me to begin with.
Breeze (I think it is Breeze...lol) works for Geigo and I think she said you can request that they not pull your credit report when getting a new policy with them. Breeze...maybe you could chime in here... L
Im very happy with them. When i have renewed, changed vehicles, etc, there were no hits on my report. I did however see a few other hit me while I was rate shopping. I didnt know they would. progressive did an inquiry.
You have nothing to worry about - they will not check your credit at renewal - driving record - yes, but not credit!
Have you ever given them your social security number? If they don't even have your number I don't see how they can check your credit. They have to ask you for permission to check your credit. Credit scoring is usually done on people who are switching to a new company.
This topic makes me so mad. I am 25 with a pristine driving record, no accidents or tickets yet because I have bad credit Progressive wanted to charge me $200/month for insurance on a 2001 Jetta! I got a couple other quotes as well that were high. AIG pulled a report but still offered a reasonable quote. I am glad to see that Geico doesn't even check. Just because we don't have good credit DOES NOT mean we are bad drivers! It's a scam!
FYI: Some states do not require them to tell you that they are pulling credit for an insurance quote. GEICO always tells you. Some companies pull at renewal, and even if you are claim free, they will raise your rates for bad credit - Farmers is the one that has made the news for this. Some states do not allow them to pull credit - CA, MD, GA, I forget the others. Some states allow them to use credit exclusively - PA, SC, AL, AZ, CO..... GEICO does pull credit in states where it is allowed, they always tell you, but if you tell them not to, they won't. They never pull at renewal - once you have a policy with them, they go by your record with them, and your driving record.
a side note to Breeze Update: going on six months with Geico, very happy everyone is always very helpful. The change from Farmers to Geico has been very positive for me. Thanks again for all your help and advice six months ago. PS to all: I asked Geico not to pull my credit report, this was a new application, and they did not. That was NOT the case with some others. They did pull a report even tho' they said they would not, so beware.
I work for another large insurance company. Our company only pulls credit when you apply and won't raise your rates at renewal for bad credit. Like Geico, we will go by your driving record, claims, etc at renewal. Of course some states don't allow insurance scoring (Write your state department of insurance and tell them to outlaw it).
