it was nice knowing ya! just kidding ..... Get dsl. earthlink is working fine for me. don't get directtv dsl or verizon, they suck bad.
How could DIRECTV be BAD? They just "BUY" a large BLOCK of business from the local phone comany, at a discount, and resell it to me at the same price as my LOCAL PHONE COMPANY...QWEST.
This is so slow...I could get the credit card in the mail, before I got the INSTANT answer on-line!!!
Now GEORGE!!!! Enough is enough. No more jokes. You are a regular here. PBM has had to defend your CAPS. Dark comments are one thing. 70K income = 100K+ credit However, no more of this "Gone" business. What has Nextcard done to you now??? Believe it or not - I enjoy your dark posts. Best regards, Jim
George, I may be joining you soon. I have @Home cable internet thru Comcast. So far I'm still on but who knows what will happen in the next few days. I simply can't stand the thought of going to a dial up provider again. I feel your pain. You must be so frustrated already! Mist
Sorry that this happened to you,George....I'm thinking this has affected MP$40(I think she has also has @home). Sister Girl
Well I had directtv dsl for about 9 months and during that time I had to call support 4 times a week. Lost packets, latency the works...... telocity( now directtv) blamed it on verizon ( my local telco)and verizon always said they where in the process of upgrading or replacing the router my ip was assigned to on the dslam site. blah blah blah.. I only stuck with them because I could get credit for my downtime and ended up only paying about 20 bucks a month. And with earthlink I have not had any down time or slowdowns at all. you should goto www.dslreports.com and check out the reviews of the companies before you decide who to go with. leo
Re: Hope too... Hey George, I was with @Home, too. Mine went down Saturday morning. But I hurried over to "Everyone.Net" $10 bucks a month deal (my former ISP) for dial-up in the interim. Of course, you KNOW how slow dial-up is, but at least there's no contract and the $10 bucks covers unlimited usage. Service is instant. http://www.ev1.net/english/index.asp Gee I hope I'm back to cable real sooooooon!
Re: Hope too... I have @Home too. I read they filed for bankruptcy protection and were urged by a judge to close out their business. Not good.
Re: Hope too... Matty, the judge didn't urge @Home to shut down their business. He gave them permission to back out of signed contracts with cable TV providers which are losing them a lot of money. Otherwise, they would be bound to fulfill those contracts, some of which don't expire for many years. If @Home can resolve its difficulties with those cable TV providers (Comcast being the largest among them), then the judge would be happy for them to remain in business. Under the existing contract, Comcast pays $12 per month to @Home for every $40 they collect from cablemodem subscribers. @Home would like to see their take doubled. AT&T openly stated that they would simply solve the problem by buying @Home whether they liked it or not (i.e., hostile takeover). In response, @Home simply cut off AT&T's subscribers Saturday, since the judge had given @Home permission to do so. Comcast, however, is trying to negotiate in a friendly way with @Home. In fact, they are feverishly attempting to work out the business details so that @Home makes money and Comcast's customers keep their internet service. I'll bet they work it out. Comcast has 4.5 million subscribers, while AT&T had only 850,000. I'm not so optimistic regarding AT&T's customers vis-a-vis @Home, by the way. Doc
Re: Hope too... Our local paper said this morning that Comcast has reached an agreement to keep @Home service for its customers for three months while it works out an alternative. Mine still works.
Re: Hope too... AT&T says they'll have everyone switched over to their lines within 10 days. doc's right about the negotiations. They are playing hardball, consumer's get the short end of the stick. The more thing change the more they stay the same. It's written up on yahoo financial news.
Re: Hope too... Well, I've got @home too. So far, so good. I wonder why they're losing so much money? @$40 a month or so, they should be making bank. Mine better not go down, I don't even HAVE a dial-up modem in my computer anymore! After the last upgrade, I had to toss it - But dial up is gonna suck after having cable I am not so sure about DSL --- our phone lines here are pretty crappy --- but I may have to check into it. The service rep at cox@home DID assure me that they are looking into a back up here in our area, they have one called RoadRunner that may serve as such. I'm so sorry for your loss, george : (
Re: Hope too... I don't have cable internet or DSL available where I live. I had Ricochet high speed wireless until they went bankrupt, so I can truly sympathize. Dial up is better than nothing, but not by much. I know this will be small consolation, but I found a free download utility that slightly, but noticably improves dial-up performance. It's at www.vmtu.com. There's no ads, no fees (and NO, I have no association with them), and it's not one of those caching utilities (like netspeed) that mucks everything up. I'm not an IT guy, but, as I understand it, VMTU (Variable Maximum Transfer Unit) continuously negotiates (in the background) with your ISP for maximum throughput, rather than one negotiation at the beginning of each session. It's a very small download (<200K), and is easily Uninstalled. Bottom line: I have noticed an improvement after installing it and any improvement is welcome, as far as I'm concerned. The only down side that I've spotted is that I usually (but not always--weird) have to manually terminate the Dial Up Networking connection now, rather than the automatic disconnect from closing all my IE windows that I had before. All in all, a fairly small price to pay. I think this is because the continuous activity in the background fools IE. I hope this helps; at least a little. If anybody tries it, please let me know if you noticed any improvement, or if you think I'm just wishing too hard... BTW, I think I may give in one of these days and get the 2-way satellite internet service from Starband. The reduction in my phone bill should cover the payment. I just don't want one of those dishes in my yard. Anybody have one? What do you think of the service?
Yep! You are exactly right! But it wouldn't of mattered anyway becuaus I just moved to a new place and AT&T is scheduled to connect my new service on 12/19. So I wouldn't of had internet access anyway until then. I'm just worried what will happen after the 19th. In the meanwhile I can use my job and dial up through them. I need to set my computer and stuff up first.
I'm back online! Yeah! Came home and had a message on my machine from AT&T saying "your area is back up; restart..."
