My husband was turned down for a Get Smart Visa because we do not have a checking account. He called and explained that we do not need a checking account because we pay all our bills through our credit union's website. We "write" checks online, the money is taken fromo ur savings account, and checks are sent out, all for free. We do not want to have a checking account because we do not need it. They finally said that if we sent a copy of our bank statement and a leter from our credit union stating that we participate in the home banking program, he could be approved. What would you guys do? Should I send a bank statement but black out most of it? (it says "check" before the name of who each check is written to). Any advice???
I WOULD HAVE YOUR CREDIT UNION DRAFT A LETTER EXPLAINING THE "FACTS" on their letterhead...but I would NOT send them a copy of your statement!!! JUST MY OPINION. DO THEY THINK THE CREDIT UNION WOULD WASTE THEIR TIME TYPING A LETTER FOR YOU/THEM AND LIE?????
Good point, George. We told them they could go to the website and see the explanation for home banking, but they did not want to do that.
Most banks (maybe not CUs?) are capped at 6 withdrawals per month from a savings account. Sounds like Providian's being too pushy. Future use - when asked "do you have a checking account" you might want to consider answering "yes" -since you think of this account as a checking account and do "write" checks against it. It's a stretch, but it's not an attempt to commit fraud. Good luck, mj
mj I am definitely going to say that I have both accounts from now on! Providian being too picky!! I may have mu husband call again and see what a different supervisor says!
