It says you need to be a member of the armed forces, or a child of one.

Is there really no other way to qualify?

They're constantly getting the best feedback on Epinions.com

    Saar,

Some people on the motley fool say you must be a member of the military to qualify for insurance but, the general public can apply for credit cards.

Saar, USAA is an awesome company. They are continually in the top 5 best companies in the US to work for. If you want insurance you have to be affiliated with the Armed Forces, but for a checking, savings, credit cards, etc. you don't have to be. They supposedly have the world's largest continuos building and are currently building one in Phoenix that is 50% bigger. Charlie

    From their site:

    Who's Eligible
Active duty, National Guard and Reserve enlisted personnel, officers and officer candidates, and their families are eligible for membership in USAA. Do you want to find out if you are eligible?

I got my insurance with them because I am a former dependent of a member (my Dad was retired army). Had to give his membership number (my Mom is still a member). And yes, I work for GEICO, & have my insurance with USAA. teehee
