I posted a letter yesterday to DeVry demanding $1000 per violation because they have accessed my credit report 3 times, beginning 3 months after my balance with them was wiped out. http://consumers.creditnet.com/straighttalk/board/showthread.php?s=&pgnum=1&postid=213981#post213981 My sister read the letter and she had some interesting thoughts: She feels these charges could be turned over to the police for further investigation. What are the chances that I am the only person whose credit is being accessed by DeVry illegally? After all, there is no reason for anyone at DeVry to even know I was ever registered with their school because I have no relationship with them. She also feels that if they do not follow through with a check, I should contact the 2 newspapers in Chicago because they both have departments that investigate consumer issues. Any thoughts? Has anyone ever tried anything like this? Terri
Terri, By all means try it. I just don't know that either the cops or the papers will pay any attention to it. Might be worth a shot. I guess you could go down a swear out a formal complaint so they will issue a warrent for arrest but it rarely works out.
They will tell you this is a civil matter, not a criminal matter. Nice to think about though...lol. L
Her thinking was that someone should investigate and find out how many peoples' credit reports have been accessed illegally like mine. We are concerned that there is fraudulent activity (as Marie has suggested in my other thread), beyond just my situation.
My sister lives in Chicago (where DeVry's home office is located) and she suggested the newspapers because they have consumer departments that investigate situations and print the letters and info in the paper. Like here we have consumer reporters on the local news. I wasn't thinking of arresting a person ( I wouldn't know who) just that this may go beyond my report.
