GM & Corvette Want Utility Bill?

Recently I applied and was approved for the GM and Corvette cards. They arrived today and when I attempted to activate, I was told there was a hold on the accounts pending security verification.

I'm not sure why this happened. Anyhoo...

    They asked for copies of:

    SS Card
    Driver's License
    2 Recent Utility Bills

I explained to the rep that I don't have any utility bills as the utilities are included in my rent. She said I had to call the security dept and they would tell me what I could substitute.

I asked her straight out, "What are they trying to verify? My name and address?"

She said, "I don't know. You have to ask them."

Then I asked, "Can I fax or do I have to mail it in?"

    "You have to mail it."

That's not all of the conversation, but I will say this. She contradicted herself at least twice in the conversation. Once she mentioned faxing it when she previously said it could not be faxed. Another time she said, "We just need something to confirm your name and address..." and then she trailed off. I guess she realized she was contradicting herself again.

I don't care if they want verfication, I just want to be sure I won't be penalized for choosing an apartment that includes utilities. I also don't want to be delayed in the availability of the cards.

Yes, I have other cards, but that's not the point!

Has anyone else had to provide this information? If so, were you able to fax it? How long did it take for the hold to be removed from your account?

HOW ABOUT THE TOP OF YOUR CREDIT REPORT???

Just keep repeating to yourself...."No one's out to get me....no one's out to get me......"

Send them the info. What's the problem?

    ......Something to hide????

    Hmmmm.....

Oh also, when you applied for this card, did you use an address on the application you have never used before? (The company can see your all your old addresses from the credit report they pulled, if it don't match your address submitted in your application, they will want to verify it is you with the good credit and not your neighbor, dad, sister, etc.)

If yes, it is a common method for people to defraud CC companies by applying for a card in the name of another person. They simply use their own address so that the card arrives at their house and not the victims. CC companies are hip to this and if you hesitate with verification they may wonder why...

Guilty until proven innocent, huh? Sounds great.

It has nothing to do with having something to hide. Do you typically just hand over information whenever someone asks you for it? Without question?

    I don't.

I make it a habit to use discretion whenever sharing *my* personal information, because I don't want it misused.

    Prevention is better than cure.

But, maybe I'm just strange for wanting to protect my personal information.

I always find it fascinating when people just take these big corporations at their word--as if these companies have a track record of being truthful. They don't. So why blindly follow?

It's even wilder hearing an opinion like on THIS BOARD, considering all we do is talk about how some big company totally reemed us on one thing or another and try to figure out how to UN-reem ourselves.

But that's just it, isn't it? This board is not about prevention. This board focuses on how to fix problems that have already occurred. It doesn't really have anything to do with how to prevent problems from occurring in the first place. My mistake.

Whether you know it or not, they are out to get me... and you ... and everyone else.

It's all silly anyway, because the stuff they ask for is easy to fabricate and they know this. The rep from the Fraud Dept admitted it to me on the line. But, they just want it anyway. And, I believe the reason why is so that if the account defaults they'll have some "media" with which to pin this account on *someone*--regardless of whether it's the right person.

It has nothing to do with the address which is almost 3 years old and present on every report. They are merely gathering media. And, this media is what they will produce if and when the validity of the account is ever challenged.

This has nothing to do with the address and it's their pretense in claiming that it is that disturbs me.

    Wow man....HEAVY!

I don't agree with you totally. I think you have some merit but let's look at this a different way shall we?

First of all.....CNoob.....YOU applied for the card. They didn't come to your house and snoop through your garbage. YOU applied for CREDIT from THEM. THEY are now in a position to grant this CREDIT to YOU.

Now, they want additional information to ensure it is YOU who are applying and receiving this line of credit from THEM and you got a problem with that!?!?

If you really feel the way you do.....CNOOB.....you wouldn't have "other credit cards" like you said. If the "big Corporations" were truly evil you wouldn't want anything to do with them.

If you were a true disbeliever in big corporation you would be driving a 1979 VW van and you would be living in your parents basement. Your frequent trips into the world of EverQuest would be your calling.

Don't waste my time with a rediculous assumption that a company that YOU WANT SOMETHING FROM wants something in return is SCREWING YOU OVER or plans to.

    WTF?

I believe you've missed the point. I don't have the inclination to list each point you have missed.

I did not dispute the fact that I applied for the card. And, no, I don't have a problem with anything.

At no time did I ever say that I was unwilling to provide the information. My issue with them is that they are requesting the information under false pretenses.

And of course they are planning to screw me over. What? Do you think they are planning to get screwed by ME? Hell no. They want to make sure that if any screwing occurs, THEY will be doing the screwing.

I'll ask them for a written disclosure on this address verification procedure. If I'm not satisfied with the disclosure, I'll cancel the card and continue using my existing cards.

In the midst of all of this, you didn't even answer my original question which makes me wonder why you responded to the thread at all.

Here's a reiteration of the original question for anyone who can answer it:

If you have a GM or Corvette Card and you had to provide address verification.... were you able to fax it? If so, to what fax number? And, how long did it take to get resolved?

LOL, I didn't think you were asking for a specific number.

I don't know any number for you.

However, I suggest you call them up and explain to them what you have told us here.

Tell them your concerns about them screwing you over and how they are planning on using your utility bills for media purposes. Explain to them how you truly feel about them and I will guarantee you will get this whole thing resolved rather quickly!

Hey, you shouldn't have taken Mel Gibson too seriously in his old movie "Conspiracy Theory".

LOL, I want you to know I am harmless. I just get frustrated sometimes when people contradict themselves. Everything I say on this board is meant for entertainment purposes only.

My SO had this too. She applied for the HH trio and got approved for Corvette & UP. HH called requesting the same documentation. It was mailed on the 13th of Dec and they still haven't done anything. We called around Dec 28th and they said it takes 3 weeks to process. Good thing she didn't want to use the card or anything.

I have to admit I see Snakeman's point. If you want the credit send it in. If you could careless skip it. Simple.

You've also missed the freaking point. People only see what they want to see.
