I'm still working through all the info at the top, so if I'm asking a Q that has been FAQ'd, sorry!

Re: "Goodwill" change on a CRA item...I just spoke with my primary mtg co., and they made it clear they will not change/delete a lone 30-day late from an open account (that is otherwise current & in good standing). Is this the typical crappola you get when speaking[/] to OCs and would a written request really be more effective? If so, why?

It's almost *always* a better idea to have it in writting rather than calling and talking to some customer service rep. So next time, write a letter and send it through planetfeedback.

Well, I sent mine through PFB and they called anyway saying no they can't (remove lates and such).

You have to "qualify" for Sears' "goodwill" adjustment program.

Sears has a goodwill adjustment "program" now? well, just 2 days ago, I composed a letter to household/bestbuy on behalf of my brother to remove a recent 30-day late payment.

Yesterday, we got a reply back saying, "Please be advised that as an exception to our policy, I have removed the derogatory history from your account and reinstated your credit line. These adjustments are effective immediately in our system; however, you should allow 30 days for the credit agencies to update their records."

So, it took just one day. My guess is it's in part what you say to them (I gave them a real nice sob story), and also luck always helps.
