Hi folks, I am at my wits end as to what to do about TransUnion, and I wonder if you have any advice about my next step. Quick back story: I had an "administrative loan" because of a MAJOR screw up on my graduate school's part back in 2003. A second error on their part lead me to default on the small loan I needed to graduate, and I paid the Atty General of Ohio for a year or so before asking this certain major university to take back my account, at which time I paid them in full. Case closed. Or I thought. Right now, all 3 agencies are reporting this account, which is getting in the way of a few opportunities, as "Closed (Paid)." Experian is reporting this account as current, Equifax is reporting "Late 120 days" and TU is reporting "Collection/Chargeoff." I have disputed this with TU in the manner listed on CreditNet, with a registered letter et al, and I got a response back from them acknowledging that I dispute the claim. Nothing has changed on this from them, and now apparently I have to deal with Equifax now too, as they're reporting incorrectly. Equifax at least on their reporting is saying "Account information disputed by consumer (Meets requirements of the Fair Reporting Act)." I assume that means I am in dispute, but all information they have is within the letter of the law, right? What do I do here? I plan on writing a second letter to TU, and a first letter to Equifax. Can you suggest another course of action? I'm not quite PO'ed to the point of trying to adopt the litigious mindset, but this is ridiculous! In the last 3 years I have built my FICO score from the low 500's to the high middle 700's (TU, who is being the biggest D-Bag, gives me a 750!). I'm lost. I don't know which way to go now. Thanks everyone. The only reason I was able to build my score up was from the info here. If I have left something out that you need to know, I'd be glad to reply with that info. Antelope
Also - I do subscribe to TrueCredit. I pulled my reports from two of the three (excluding Experian, which said an answer to a security question was wrong and refused to give me an electronic copy) to check their accuracy against the TrueCredit 3-bureau report. This is how I found the additional info. Thanks!
Have you tried disputing it with the collection agency that holds the account? I would start with them by sending a DV letter including copies of anything that shows the account has been paid. TU and Exp and Eq are just going to tell you to contact the agency, tell you to provide more information, or the response that you already got saying they confirm you are disputing the debt. If you have proof that you paid the account then you should have no problem getting it removed or, at least, marked as paid.
