I am a member of Pentagon Federal Credit Union, I have a savings account and a credit card issued by them... Today when checking my reports I noticed that they pulled a hard inquire from my TransUnion? I have applied for nothing???? asked for no credit card increase??? can they do this??????? Why????? What should I do????

Get in touch w/someone at the CU and tell them you're very upset. Since you have an account w/them, an AR (account review) is all that's needed to satisfy whatever they're looking for.

The exception would be if you are looking for credit - they need to "mark" you CR to that effect - or you didn't previously have a relationship and just opened the account.

I'm fighting this battle now w/Citizen's Bank - they assured it was a soft inquiry and they pulled a hard.

You know I don't understand what in the world they are looking for? I just opened my accounts with them in May 10, 2003 - that was only 5 months ago...

Timelines are fuzzy here. When did they pull your CR? Was it around the time you got the CC w/them?

Ok, just got off the phone with them... This is how it goes, TransUnion was not showing the tradeline for my credit card with them (Pentagon), so I kept calling and asking Pentagon to report to TransUnion, they said they are reporting. TransUnion was not reporting... so Pentagon Pulled a hard from TransUnion. NOW!!!! They are now reporting, CRAZY RIGHT!!!!!!! A hard for a tradeline... that should have been on there in the first place?????

Still doesn't work for me. They could have asked for soft inquiry, an Account Review.

Should not be difficult to get this removed, considering how brute force they were about troubleshooting.

You complain to your mechanic that there's a slow leak in the tire. He can't find one. You bring it back again, same thing. Third time he takes out a revolver and shoots the tire. NOW he can find the leak...

    • As bad as it sounds, they have the right to do it. Talk to them, try to work it out, but if they say "No", that's it ...

Re: Re: Hard Inquires (what to do?)

I don't agree. They have the *option* of pulling a hard inquiry OR a soft inquiry.

DMB pulls soft inquiries all the time on me - they're called Account Reviews.

When I request a CL increase, they pull a hard. They have ALL the info they need from the AR, but they CHOOSE to pull a hard inquiry because it will "mark" my credit report as having asked for credit - in this case, more credit.

This makes sense, in the global "what if he runs around and opens up ten credit cards in one day?" paranoid view of the consumer.

OTH, Citizen's Bank pulled a hard when I opened up a second checking account. I had a relationship w/them for ten years, several accounts and this just didn't make sense. When I asked, I was told it would be a soft inquiry, which made sense. The hard inquiry makes NO sense to me, since I was not asking for credit.

I have a thread about exactly this BS, how the laws have got to change because people are losing FICO points because they get car insurance, buy a cell phone and open a checking account. It's called "enough" and apparently, nobody wants to DO anything here, based on the lack of interest.

Re: Re: Re: Hard Inquires (what to do?)

    • You're right, they have the OPTION to pull hard or soft, but FCRA gives them THE RIGHT to pull hard ...

      § 604. Permissible purposes of consumer reports [15 U.S.C. § 1681b]

      (a) In general. Subject to subsection (c), any consumer reporting agency may furnish a consumer report under the following circumstances and no other:

      (3) To a person which it has reason to believe

      (F) otherwise has a legitimate business need for the information

(ii) to review an account to determine whether the consumer continues to meet the terms of the account.

So, for as long as you have an OPEN account with them, they have the PP for a hard inquiry ...

Wachovia pulls credit reports on new bank accounts now. I know thats a little different because you are a current customer. But Wachovia will NOT open an account if you refuse them to look at your report. But after looking at TU, it didn't show up there as a Hard Inquiry.

THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO A "HARD"--THEY CAN DO A "SOFT"---LIKE THERE IS NO LAW THAT SAYS THEY MUST PULL!!!!!!!

...OR I CAN GIVE THEM A WK FROM TODAY!!!!!!
