I received a collection letter from Nationwide Credit Inc. (NCI). I sent the validation letter. It's for a debt that has past the SOL. Any advice or stories with dealing with these folks. Any comments or advice is greatly appreciated!

All I know is they ignore validation requests and just keep sending collection letters telling you the "THE CLOCK IS TICKING", "WE ARE A SMALL COMPANY AND CANNOT AFFORD TO WRITE-OFF OR FORGIVE THIS DEBT LIKE THE BIG BANKS DO" AND "WE ARE PREPARING THE LAWSUIT IF PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED WITHIN 7 DAYS OF THE DATE OF THIS LETTER".

So far they have just ignored my requests and just keep sending the generic letters, maybe someone else here has had a different response from them.

If my debt was past the SOL I would use WhyChat's Sol letter in a heartbeat!

They sent me a collection letter for an old debt for a repo. The car was turned in and I NEVER heard from ANYONE and it happened in Dec 96 until I received their letter demanding $8K. I pulled them up on the net and they appear to be a BIG FISH! Has anyone else had dealings with them? What do you do if they don't validate the the debt? I'm a NEWBIE and need advice - this is the only collection matter I've dealt with and I'm stressed - please help with your guidance and advise! THANKS!!

I'm bringing this thread back to life because I'm dealing with NCI now. (There are 2 NCI's by the way. One in GA and one in VA. they are not affiliated in any way. they just have the same name, lol.) anyway, the one I'm dealing with is based in GA and it doesnt look like a small company. In fact, they claim to have offices all over the US. Has anyone dealt with this GA based company? I got one call from them about a month ago and I told them I'd prefer to keep communication in writing, and I havent heard a peep from them. Not even a letter yet. I'm not sure if they've started reporting to CRAs yet. I wanted to wait until I got a letter from them to check my reports. (I dont do credit monitoring services for myself--just for hubby right now.) They have my new address, so I'm not sure why I havent gotten a letter yet. When they called, I told them I was willing to settle for deletion, and the CSR said she would tell her supervisor, and they would let me know if my offer had been accepted. I havent heard anything. my question is: does anyone know if this company usually settles accounts for deletion? and do they play fair? (Well, relatively fair for a Collection Agency at least?)

also, can they report this to the CRAs even tho they havent written me a letter yet?

    thanks.

Don't wait to hear from them.

Send them a validation letter now, even if they didn't give you an account number, and include a limited c&d for only written correspondences, no phone calls, no third party communications.

Chances are they won't write, they don't want you to request validation, and most people will either wait for the written letter, or it to appear on their report to start validation, if they don't write until after the 30 days from the first communication, they think that they can evade the validation later...

The only way to cease the collection activity is if you invoke validation in writing, phone disputes don't, (even though they force them to notate that the account is in dispute.)

Yes, they could report the collection account to the CRAs before they ever contact you. There are some that never contact anyone, they just submit a tape to the CRA, and wait until you find out through the CRA, and are despirate to clear it to get something approved.

Think of it this way, its the most affordable way to collect, they don't pay anything (other than what it takes to send the tape with all of their other accounts on it as well, to the CRAs), and they don't have to spend $0.37 for postage for each of their notices...

You want to get into the habit of validating first, as soon as you find out about them, so that you keep their options limited...
