I received a settlement notice from First National Collection Bureau, Inc. They want to settle on an old credit card debt I had (Marin). I'd like to attempt to negotiate settlement for deletion (hoping). Has anyone dealt with them before? Just trying to figure out if my odds are good with them. Also, does anyone have any contact info on them (address, fax, etc.) All I have is a phone number. Thanks in advance!
Before you stick your foot in your mouth and $crew yourself, find out a bit more about this debt. 1: How long since the last payment? 2: What State do you live in? 3: What is that State's Statute of Limitations for this type of debt? 4: What is the nature of the debt? 5: Do you REALLY owe it? With that information we may beb able to give you some solid advice on how to correctly deal with this.
1. Last activity is 5/2000 (I got a song and dance on the phone with a 'salesperson' about this card, I thought it was a secured card, then got it and realized the 'fees' and demanded they close the account immediately..no excuse, though, still my fault for not investigating before signing up) 2. I'm in Virginia 3. If I'm reading the SOL charts correctly, it's 5 years 4. Credit Card - FNB-Marin 5. Yes, unfortunately it is mine. Despite not using the card and trying to cancel immediately after realizing I'd been 'duped'...I still signed up for the card initially. This is being listed on my reports as FNB-Marin, not this collection agency. It's just showing 'charged off'. Should I go to the OC to try to negotiate? (or can this agency contacting me negotiate for deletion?) Thanks for the help, I'm a MAJOR newbie at all of this!
I'd like to add another question, that hopefully someone can answer (I'm a bit confused, sorry). Is it best to deal with the OC or the CA when trying to settle a debt? I basically only have about 10 very small charge-offs, etc. left on my report... and when I say small, I mean $25, $52, etc. Small enough to where I can just pay it and be done with it. Should I contact the OC or the CA? (in some cases, both are listed on my reports, or some are one or the other). If the OC has sold the debt, can I still deal with them even? Thanks again!
