A close friend of mine co-signed an auto loan through Mitsubishi Motors Credit (MMC), last year, for a family member. The family member defaulted on the loan and changed all of the contact info so that my friend would not find out that they were behind in the payments.

Well MMC started calling my friends, friends, looking for him. They left messages on several of his friendâ??s cell and home phones. When my friend got word of this, he called MMC and they told him what was going on and that they must have had his friends numbers because he must have put them on the application under personal references.

My friend has taken care of the late payments and all of that. However my friend is very upset that MMC contacted his friends and not him.

What we are trying to figure out is how did MMC get his friends numbers. See, 3 of the contacted friends, have new cell phones that they got many months after my friend signed the contracts. Not only that but one of the friends that was called, was called on 2 cell phone numbers that ARE NOT in his name or address. We are shocked and very puzzled. Please give any ideaâ??s you may have on how they were able to do this and if it is legal.

Thank you for your time everyone.

Some one isn't talking. One of those friends gave them other numbers. They can't find out any other way. Or a family member narked. Its impossible to get a cell phone number. Even if they called nextel, cingular, etc., you can't get someone's cell number that way.

    1) Never co-sign.
    2) If you do (1), you should get a copy of all paperwork when you sign. You are part of the contract too.

Hey everyone! Well we found out that yes they did get a hold of my friends phone bill records. They obtained what is called a Residential Toll Call Report or Cellular Phone Call Report.

Believe or not there are companies who offer a service in which they will sell you this data on ANYONE you want. This is just sick and wrong and my friend is very angry and looking into doing whatever he can do with the law. From our understanding it is illegal for a company to use the numbers with out a court order.

We are 100% certain that this is how they got these unlisted phone numbers. None of the friends who were contacted new anything about it until they were contacted. Also these are his very close friends. We have no doubt as to what happened. Be warned that this could happen to you too.

Here is a link to one of a few different companies that offer this service: http://www.efindoutthetruth.com/PhoneBreaks.htm

Below is text, taken directly from this company:

â??Residential Toll Call Report We require the subjects billing name, address, and landline phone number.
We return long distance and/or local toll calls for one (1) billing cycle.
