I am working on a government contract. Recently, we had to fill out paperwork for a security clearance. According to their stipulations, you can have no more than $5,000 of delinquent debt. Wouldn't you know it, I had approx. $5300 and I recieved a letter of inquiry where I have to account for each one of these debts individually. I can't tell you how long it has been since I pulled my credit report, I should have done it before filling out the paperwork, but I didn't. I asked for an extentsion, they originally gave me 10 days to answer. Now it has been a couple of months and I need to do something with the rest of this stuff pretty quick. I was hoping you guys could guide me in the right direction. Here it goes! Any and all advice is appreciated! Cap 1-last active 5/00 $1044, P&L- they recently sent a collection letter, thought I was past SOL on that one. can they do that? Don't mind paying them if they are mine of course, but don't know how to determine that within a short timeframe. I know the HIPPA stuff takes 35 days. Not sure about the SOL for those either. I am in AL. Again, your help is appreciated! Thanks!
I wonder if you paid off one of these bad debts and showed them proof that you indeed did pay it. (just to bring it under the 5k mark) if that would help or not. I know my husband applied for a part time job at an outlet store (he already works a full time job but was going to do this to help reduce our bad debts) This was a chain store that sells sporting goods and my husband is over qualified any was he was all set to get hired for this 6.25hr job and then they pulled the credit report and said due to the credit report they couldn't hire him. Imagine that you try to do what needs to be done and still get shot down. And as for help on this board I hope you have better luck than I've had. I posted about a week ago and have not had any advise on my situation. I think maybe this board is used to just post what experiences one has with this and that collection agency or credit bureau. JMHO Hope it all works out for you. Good luck.
NCO is the easiest on the list to remove. Send them a communication with the implication therein that you may litigate and they will delete the tradeline. That alone would bring you below the 5k threshold. If they still want documentation, withdrawal and re-apply.
Thanks for the advice so far guys! When I asked for the extension, the man implied that as long as it was under 5K that it would be ok, but I still have to explain WHY I have not paid these debts. Quite frankly, I did not know they were still hanging out there. As for withdrawing and reapplying, I have been at this job for 9 months already and make $20/hr. not something I am able to do. at this point even if the debt is taken care of, I still may loose my job because they may think that I was trying to lie about it. PA1205 that really sucks about your husbands situation! My husband went through 2 layoffs making $45K per yr and when he went to apply for a job similar to what your husband did just to have some income, he was also denied based on credit. Not quite fair when you have been laid off and unable to pay your bills. There is a difference in unwilling and unable. apexcrsrv-what kind of letter should I send to NCO? And it goes to NCO directly, not to the CRA first?
First you really need to dispute all these to the CRA's and go from there. As for your job - tell them the truth - that you had not looked over your credit report for a long time and now that it has been brought to your attention you are working on correcting the situation. For the medical tell them that the doctors were suppose to take what the insurance paid and you are checking into why you have all these medical bills that insurance clearly was to take care of. Ask them to give you some time to straighten out this situation. This is a lesson everyone should learn - check your credit reports at least monthly to make sure YOU know what it contains to avoid situations like this. Your job, your insurance, your financial life depends on it!
