    Two Questions.
1*Why was the phone company reporting to Telecheck. What business did they have for doing that? ? ?
2*Why was Telecheck letting SBC report to them and what right does Telecheck
have to place such information in their files? ?

Certigy and/or telecheck can be royal pains in the rear! I moved into a new area and got a new checking account. lots of money in the account, but for some reason if you start writing a bunch of checks (bunch of checks as termed by the Telecheck rep meaning more than 3) and they start spitting denials out at me. Talk about embarrassing. I spent a few hours in Tors-R-Us on the week of Xmas and low and behold Telecheck strikes. They didnt tell me if they ran a credit check or anything. They gave me some vague BS about the computer just makes the choice to reject or accept and it is loosely based on many factors, yada, yada, yada. But when Certigy offered to send me an application for a premier or gold level account in which I will recieve special consideration when passing checks in the future. basically a form to authenticate or validate me further. Im not sure if they had some kind of fee associated with it or not, but it seemed like a pain and i never did it.
One place I've never had a problem passing a check is Wal-Mart. you could write 25 checks in a day and they'd go through (for me anyway). Some Wal-Marts use SCAN. Some Telecheck. but never had a problem with them. If you have an account that has burned a bridge with one of those companies and your account keeps throwing up red flags when you try to pass a check I have heard of people either getting new checking accts, changing their DL numbers, etc. Of course it's a lot easier just to pay what you owe. But often times fraud and errors in reporting don't make it as cut and dry and you have to go in the 'back door' just to keep it normal. I don't envy anyone who has red flags on Telecheck.

    __________

SBC only reported to one agency directly as far as I can tell, Experian. The account is marked 'reported' on the account entry in my 3 in 1 credit report under Experian. Experian was also the only one to update the account to 'paid' while I tried to get the entry off supporting the notion that they are only reporting to Experian.

The other report with the other CRA, Transunion, seems to be resulting from some kind of mutual updating and mutation where the CRAs gang up and report some items to each other somehow. Those accounts are listed as 'Automated Accounts' as though the information magically appeared.

Of course, good things are never shared =)

Telecheck just said they based their decision on several things including a credit check, and sent me a copy of the credit information they used which led me to pitch a fit at SBC.

I'm almost willing to go the centralized gov't database of creditworthiness so I only have to argue with ONE bureaucracy every time my credit is f@!!@ up.

Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall!

we had telecheck deny a check once based on our check numbers. they said the numbers we were using where too low and we had to write more checks to establish 'credit' with telecheck. It is so embarassing getting denied for a check when you have money in the bank and no bad check writing record. our solution was to just trash the first batch of checks and start using some higher numbered ones (seriously).

very friggin stupid. thats a reason I dont write checks anymore, I dont feel like being treated like a criminal when I hand it to them.

hell, its getting to be the same way with debit cards and credit cards..I cant count how many times I get asked for my ID, even though my card is signed. I know some people think this is good, but I find it offensive..especially when an older person right in front of me hands their card over and doesnt get asked for their ID.

It is contrary to their agreement with Visa and maybe with Master Card as well to demand identification of the customer. It is also contrary to their agreements to refuse to accept a charge under a certain amount. I have seen some convenience store refuse to take charge cards if the amount is under say $1 or $3 or $5, whatever their policy might be. It is against their agreements to do any of that.

Now then, how valid is the above statement that I have just made? I honestly don't know. Don't have the foggiest idea.

But here is an 800# so you can all find out for yourself. I hope its still good because I never have used it. Just picked up the info about a year ago in another message forum somewhere. So if its wrong come back and tell us but don't say I didn't warn you.

Yeah i've heard of that = You might say it's the FICO of check numbers.
They way around this is to always start your check numbers at 300 or higher when ordering new checks.

Another one I have heard of is being denied because your check numbers are out of order.

Funny y'all mention this, some co-workers and I had this exact conversation at work today. One that was denied by telecheck went to the manager of the store about it and was told any check # under 2000 would be denied.

I know it's a mistake in posting this, as probably tomorrow I wont be able to cash a check or use a credit card!

I cannot ever remember not being able to cash a check or ever having the back of my credit card checked (except once many years ago, and then the clerk said I never sign the back my self) I have never signed the back of any credit card. I really don't know why I don't???? Mental block, don't think about it,...... just never have.

I have had to show I.D. at one Walmarts in Houston but never in S. Louisiana. Some Credit Cards were stolen from a neighbor and used at Walmart for about $4,000. I have probably been to Walmart 20 times since that, and still never had to show I.D.

Strange, but like I said, tomorrow all Hell will probably break loose.

unfortunately, that doesn't fly....as in the signs posted ath the business that say..all checks acceptability determined (something real close to this) by Telecheck. I was notified in advance in writing by these posts at the store, and by signing and handing over the check 'agreed to whatever their procedure' for 'verification and acceptability' were.

A check is just another instrument of credit....

Why is a check an "instrument of credit"?
A check grants the bearer permission to withdraw a certain amount of money from your account, immediately. If you write the check without the funds to back it up on deposit, it is a crime. I see no "credit" involved.

If one is going to argue that checks are "credit" because they are exchangeable for federal reserve notes, which are "credit" , then is there permissible purpose to pull credit reports before accepting cash?

Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall!

I had a check refused once because of the check numbers. I have some accounts on which I rarely write checks. In one case, it even said on the check that it was opened 6-84, but the store still wouldn't accept the check. Their reasoning is that it's a "new" account (almost 10years???) and maybe you set it up to write bad checks or something. Stupid, I know, but that's the logic.

So, I asked the bank for a new order of checks starting with number 1001. Guess what--THEY REFUSED. They said it was "illegal" to do that. Well, I went to one of these mail order check companies, said I wanted my check numbers to start at 1001, and bingo--instant acceptance. If they make it no checks under 2000, I'll get a batch starting at 2001.

Maybe we should all just order checks starting at 10001 and be done with it!

Some places won't take checks unless they have your name and address printed on them, too. I am on the board of an organization, and we only have the name printed on checks because the treasurer may change every year, and the statements go to the treasurer. So I can only deposit reimbursement checks from them and then write my own checks.

I live in a "COLLEGE" town...just about every restaurant in town that still take checks...FROWN on checks under #1000...because most of the checks that BOUNCE are under #1000...more than 50% of them are under #300...

All the "MAIL ORDER" checks I have seen say start check #_______(if you don't say it will start at 101...

F.Y.I.~~~THERE IS NO STATE OR FEDERAL LAW THAT SAYS YOU CAN'T START YOUR ACCOUNT AT A NUMBER OTHER THAN #101
***IT IS A "BANK" LAW THAT HAS #101***

It is an instrument of debt, not an instrument of credit.
It is a negotiable instrument but so is a credit card to the merchant. The only real difference is who is it that is providing the merchant a guarantee that he will get his money at some future point in time.
Wrong argument. They are instruments of debt not instruments of credit.
Yes, and they do it all the time. Telecheck and their ilk are credit bureaus so if the merchant runs your check through one of them then he has pulled a credit report.

IT VIOLATES CREDIT CARD POLICY TO ASK FOR ID ON A SIGNED CARD!!!

I tell the stores this and sometimes have the sale VOIDED and WALK OUT WITH-OUT ANYTHING (I let them have their way at CHRISTMAS when I had waited 25 min. in line)

I show my letter from VISA saying that I do not need to show ID when my card is signed and the signatures MATCH!!!

Some stores would rather lose a $200 sale, than BACK DOWN!!! Good thing MOST BACK DOWN!!!

WHAT IS REALLY AMAZING IS THAT THE STORE GETS PAID EVEN IF I DON'T PAY THE BILL OR I'M LATE IN PAYING...SO THEY CAN'T LOSE!!!

If the signatures DON'T match ASK FOR ID...or the "PERSON" is wrong for the name...like it says FRED and the purchaser is a woman...that is different...ASK FOR ID!!! If she really is FRED on the ID...FINE MAKE THE SALE.

At the local Oshman's and at least at one Taco Cabana hey have a notice posted "ID required for All Credit Card Transactions." At Oshman's, they told me they were 'required to ask for id" because of the amount of credit card fraud at their store.

No one could tell me 'required by whom'

NO BUSINESS IS EVER REQUIRED TO "INVESTIGATE" ANY FRAUD BY CUSTOMERS...short of checking signature with the signature on the card and asking for ID on unsigned cards or when the card name does not match the person...like I said before if the card says FRED SMITH and it is a lady...or the signature "JUST DOES NOT MATCH"...(JUDGEMENT CALL)...

Speaking of signatures~~THE STUPID DMV DIDN'T LIKE MY SIGNATURE ON THAT SCREEN THINGY THAT IS PRINTED ON THE LICENSE!!! I SAID TUFF!!!

If the store has an authorization number and the signatures matched...THEY GET PAID...they would NEVER be asked to be the credit card companies SECURITY DEPARTMENT!!!

I am NOT saying that if a store is sure a FRAUD is going to be committed...they can always call the credit card company and confirm the card has not just been stolen.
They can make a CODE 10 call...

    Code 10 Steps

If you receive an electronic authorization, but still suspect fraud, do the
    following:

Keep the card in hand to quickly respond to questions.

Call your voice authorization center or dial 1-800-FRAUD-FREE
(1-800-372-8337) and say "I have a Code 10 Authorization Request."

The call will first be received by your merchant bank who may need to
ask you for some merchant and/or transaction details. You will then be
transferred to the card Issuer and immediately connected to a special
operator. A series of yes/no questions will be asked to determine
whether you are suspicious of the card or cardholder.

When connected to the special operator, answer all questions calmly
and in a normal tone of voice.

    Follow all operator instructions.

If the operator asks you to retain the card, comply with this request only
if it is safe to do so
