1*Unfortunately, that doesn't fly....as in the signs posted at the business that say..all checks acceptability determined (something real close to this) by Telecheck. I was notified in advance in writing by these posts at the store, and by signing and handing over the check 'agreed to whatever their procedure' for 'verification and acceptability' were. 2*A check is just another instrument of credit.... rfmjb =============== 1*As to the store pulling Tellcheck yes. Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! <<1* Why is a check an "instrument of credit"? A check grants the bearer permission to withdraw a certain amount of money from your account, immediately. If you write the check without the funds to back it up on deposit, it is a crime. I see no "credit" involved. Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! So, I asked the bank for a new order of checks starting with number 1001. 1*Guess what--THEY REFUSED. They said it was "illegal" to do that. ===================== Hedwig ============== 1*They Lied.
Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! When I moved to Illinois from Indiana, I had a Bank One account in Indiana, my last number was in the 2300's. When I moved to Illinois, I had to open an new Bank One account, since Bank One Indiana, and Bank One Illinois were not linked (separate systems) they refused to start me at my last number, and wanted to start me at 100. With my account I had free checks ~so I ordered checks until I was at the number I wanted to be at It was quite funny actually the call was something like: Yes I'd like to reorder checks, if that's possible over the phone Rep: I would be glad to help with your request. Me: I'd like 25 boxes if possible Rep: 25 boxes? Me: Yes, 25 boxes Rep: (laughing) no problem. Me: I do have free checks correct? Rep: Let me double check.....yes, you do. May I ask WHY you need 25 boxes? Me: I want a higher number check series, and since your company's policy is to start at 100, even though I had a previous account in Indiana, I figured I'd try this way. Rep: Sir, I've put in your request, you should receive your new check in 7-14 days, is there any thing else I can help you with? Me: Nope, that would be it. Needless to say I live in a apartment right now, so they couldn't fit all the little red boxes in my mail box, so they left them at the clubhouse... A check is considered a.... § 3-104. Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! Oh, I've got a good one for you guys. Last weekend, hubby and I went to the casino. I have never activated my Visa debit card so I was trying to write a check. Guess what, I was declined through Certegy. Never wrote a bad check in my life, credit is perfect. Why? The girl told me Certegy goes by you're check writing history. I have NEVER had a check writing history with Certegy. And guess what else, they gave me NOTHING telling me why, or how to get in touch with them to inquire why.
Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! I'd send them a real mean letter telling them they violated FCRA. I sure would not count on being able to enforce it though.(LOL) Might be fun trying it however.
Re: Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! WHAT IS CERTEGY???? I don't think that name has EVER came up here!!!

Re: Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! I believe Certegy is the check division of Efx. that's what the girl at the casino told me.
Telecheck is a check guarantee company. The merchants use them to guarantee payment for them. They are not on-line with your bank. That means that they never know how much money you have in your account. The system is set up with guide lines that the check has to meet. If the check does not meet all the guidelines, it will decline the transaction. Telecheck goes on check writing HISTORY. If the system only shows 1 or 2 transaction for under a certain amount... it MAY decline the check you are writing for X amount of dollars. The system can not guarantee a check if there has never been a transaction in the system, or if there are other transactions in the system but all under.... say.... $50.00... and this one is for $600.00. You have to build a check writing history through Telechecks system. So maybe you have had the same account for 10 years... you write checks every day.... BOOM one day you are at the store and write a check for $235.00.. Check is declined... Call telecheck and they will ask you for current info. update the system.. and they MAY be able to overturn the check. Why would it overturn that check? Because you have a check writing history in their system. The system sees that there has been other transactions that have been pros. through that system and it CAN guarantee that check. The reason the system takes 6 days when a transaction is declined before you can write another check to a Telecheck store is because some stores only update their systems every 3 to 4 bus. days. The 6 days gives all the Telecheck systems enough time to update. Just because you were declined once does not mean that you will be declined all the time. Just like you never being declined by Telecheck or Scan or Certegy does not guarantee that you will never be declined at any store that uses those systems. Oh and if you ever have a return check and the merchant that the check was written to uses Telecheck, or Scan, or Certegy, that check will be returned to one of those collection departments. And anytime there are return check in their systems... your check writing history will start over again with the company We are just CSR reps on the other line, and we are doing what we can to help you.
Re: Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! Casinos also use Telecheck and Certegy and Scan. It all depends on which GCA Booth you use
Re: Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! Your utility bills are not ran through Telecheck most likely. So that does not go in their system. They can not use those checks to start a check writing history to guarantee payment for the merchant
Re: Re: Re: Help! My check was denied at mall! Thanks for the background. Although your reply was tacked onto this old thread, perhaps you were intending to reply to this more recent complaint: http://consumers.creditnet.com/Discussions/showthread.php?s=&postid=447123#post447123 The above consumer has essentially been going around and around with Telecheck regarding check rejection, even though the reports they have been sending show no negative information. Telecheck, like all CRAs, is required under FCRA to provide assistance to consumer in interpretting their reports. The consumer in the above case even had a Telecheck tracking number provided by the retail merchant where his check was rejected, yet the Telecheck CSR apparently could not provide the reason for the check rejection. It also does not appear that the merchant even knows what Telecheck's rejection means, as they are treating it as an indication of a negative check history, which it is not, resulting in a loss of business to the merchant, and a hassle and waste of time to the consumer.
