Hey Nana, long time no post I am a migraine sufferer and whenever I was out of meds and felt a headache coming on, my doctor suggested drinking a black cup of coffee, I hate coffee but the thought of getting a doozy of a headache, I would drink it and alot of times this did the trick. Or take some advil liquid gel tabs, this sometimes helps me as well.
Mom, Mom, Mom, my friend.. putting on a pot now..I like it (not black but what the heck..anything to get rid of this).. I had my first migraine at 5...they got better after my hysterectomy and this isn't one..just an annoying ache.. Thanks so much!
NanaC, I know that this is a little late, but have you tried Excedrin Migraine yet? The stuff is like POT!!! I mean...it really works. It has caffeine in it to get those stress headaches and also a pain releiver. It works like a charm. Good luck, hope the coffee worked!
How about a good B-complex vitamin tablet? Especially if you use a lot of caffeine, your body may be depleted of B vitamins. Beware of too much niacin, though. More than about 50 mg of niacin makes me nervous, thirsty, sleepless...worse than whatever problem the vitamins were intended to address.
That was 2 good suggestions and 1 veiled really good suggestion..J/K Erica, yes, good idea, thank you, it has worked before and I honestly forgot. Richguy, gonna buy some today...hope it will help with the frequency. You both rock! Thank you
NanaC, I too suffer from severe Migraines and have been since I was 21. My remedy I use when I am out of Zomig is I take 4 Extra Strength Tylenol and drink a Dr. Pepper. (Dr. Pepper is loaded with caffeine) Then I go lay down in a dark, quiet room with a Ice Pack on my forehead. This seems to work for me. I did try coffee and it didn't help me like the Dr. Pepper. So I always keep Dr. Pepper in my refrigerator. Good Luck. Success
They used to have some good Tylenol out that would kill any pain. I think it was called cyanide strength Tylenol. Don't flame me. I am kidding Anyway, get an eye checkup. Poor eyesight is a sure cause of bad headaches as is cigarette smoke to some people. I had horrible headaches before my vision was corrected. Now I only get headaches in the afternoon (when my wife gets home). Haha.
NanaC If all them remedies above this one don't help, trot down to the drugstore and get a big box of exlax and flush it all out. Follow with preparation H (LOL)
Here are some recommendations, courtesy of Dr. Weil (www.drweil.com). Best of luck. -bb Eliminate coffee and decaffeinated coffee from your life, as well as all other sources of caffeine. Make sure you are not taking any OTC or prescription drugs that contain it. Once you are off caffeine, you can use coffee as a treatment for migraine. Drink one or two cups of strong coffee at the first sign of an attack, then lie down in a dark, quiet room. Eliminate other common dietary triggers of migraine: chocolate, wine (red is usually more of an offender than white, but both can do it), all strong-flavored cheeses (cottage cheese and cream cheese are all right), fermented foods (including soy sauce and miso), sardines, anchovies, and pickled herring. Take feverfew herb, one or two capsules a day. Make sure the product you buy specifies that the leaves are freeze-dried or that it is a standardized extract. This remedy reduces the frequency of migraine attacks in many people. You can stay on it indefinitely. Take a course of biofeedback training, with the specific goal of learning to raise the temperature of your hands. Once you master this technique, it will be a tool you can use to abort a headache at the start of an attack. Use allopathic medication sparingly and cautiously. Experiment with the prescription drug ergotamine to abort migraine attacks. It is a powerful constrictor of arteries that must be used at the very first sign of a headache to be effective. An under-the-tongue form is available, or use the suppository form if nausea is a problem. Your doctor will tell you how to use this drug. Do not take the prescription drug Fiorinal on a regular basis. Doctors hand it out like candy to migraine sufferers without warning them that it contains an addictive downer (butalbital, a barbiturate) and caffeine in addition to aspirin. Do not take prednisone or other steroids to prevent migraines. The dangers of steroids outweigh any benefits.
