Okay, he's not really homeless, he's got an apartment, but he'd like to buy a home.

I have a customer who has tried the services of a credit repair person with mixed results. He started with three scores in the mid 500's and after two months, he's got two scores in the upper 500's and one that's dropped into the 400's.

As near as I can tell, this credit repair person just used a shot-gun approach, sending a "not me" letter on everything negative.

His biggest problem is student loans. About three years ago he let a bunch of them fall behind before consolidating them into one big loan. Previously these had been reporting as paid collections with zero balances, now they're reporting as "claim filed with government for insured portion of balance on loan" and "special handling - contact subscriber if more info is required" and then the balance (which is zero) is not reporting at all. These are on Experian.

He has other negative issues, but this is the big one.

Any ideas on a next step?

According to YM - he will need to wait seven years to let them fall off, and chalk it up to a lesson learned.

    Call it tough love.

Sounds like he made some bad choices previously. I'd say he needs to change his lifestyle. What kind of person doesn't pay their bills, most of all student loans?

He needs to contact the Student Loan Ombudsman and see if they'll help him work something out. They're a great service which is run by the Gov't, especially designed to help people with student loan problems.

    Here's a link:

Tell him that if he's going to make arrangements with the Ombudsman, he better stick to it. They're nice people if you follow through and do what you say you're going to do.

Hmmm, thanks for the advice, but he needs help with how these accounts are reporting. I checked that site and the only help the Ombudsman has to offer with that is to refer it back to the credit bureaus.

He needs to contact the Ombudsman himself. They'll fix it if he explains the problem and provides supporting documents.

Unfortunately he will just have to live with the consequences of his actions. He should have thought about this before he decided to stiff Uncle Sam.

As Max at EXP advises in these situations, assuming he pays his bills on time, eventually his credit will improve, hopefully while he is still alive to buy a house.

LOL, it's not confusing, it's just a little sarcasm floating around in the air.

And I guess if he researched before he made those lifestyle choices, he could have rehabbed instead of consolidating and leaving all this mess behind. As many have said, it's a decision he can live with for the next seven years. Hopefully he'll still be young enough to buy and enjoy a house.

I understand that the credit bureaus are now planning have a new consumer relief program.

If one enters the program he can escape the 7 year thingy and get a clean record very quickly.

All he has to do is to spend 7 days per bad listing in their
    pillories on bread and water.

You know what a pillory is don't you? Thats where they have a big wooden deal on the front lawn that has 5 holes in it. One for your head, and one for each of your 4 other appendages, feet and arms.

Now you stop and figure it out, that's not so bad. Let's say you have 60 derogatories on each of the 3 credit bureaus. That's only 420 days times 3 credit bureaus. What the heck does that amount to?

I hear one infamous creditnetter has applied for the position to preach constantly to those who choose to enter the new programs.

What a concept!! In your scenario, that's only 1260 days, or just under 3 and a half years. WOW! You could cut the time to clean credit in half. And don't even worry about those three and a half years you can't work. if you get more derogs, they'll probably let you do the program again. After all, isn't that your lifestyle choice, to sit in the front yard instead of working and paying bills and getting derogs off by our methods?

So what I'm getting by reading this thread, is that I can post all I want, but to actually ask questions about credit repair and get some advice from someone with experiance, I need to change my handle?

Too Much, thank you for your advice. I'll check into the Ombudsman and see if anything can be done from that angle.

When you change your handle, better use a different internet provider too. We will recognize this one.

Actually, contacting the ombudsman is the only good advice at this point.

There are actually parasites out there who lead unsuspecting students to believe that consolidating their loans will solve their problem. It doesn't. The loans must be rehabbed where they are, and then the derogs are take off the student's CR. If the student consolidates before rehabbing, they are stuck with the derogs.

Looks to me like Mycroft took the first step in trying to get along. Does "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." ring a bell. Not that I'm religious, but do think the 10 commandments are a pretty good set of rules for living. If you don't like him, ignore him. If you think he's wrong correct him, but why keep the friction going by slamming, agitating, and ridiculing.

I personally think he is sincere in asking for help and does want to get along with the group.

Bayou, you are a 100% correct.

A part of me is ashamed, but he has hurt the board, and I simply don't feel nice yet.

    Onthebayou,

You may be correct, but this person has done nothing but disrupt the board since he/she came here. One post is not going to fix that and change peoples opinions, and I know I am not the only one that feels that way. One can not walk into someones house, cause a stir, and then on a dime turn their tone and be accepted right away.
