Has anyone had luck with talking to Providian directly, to settle and get a deletion?

I have a charged-off Providian account (1000$) that went bad in April of 2000. It shows on my Experian as Closed/Charged Off status, but still has a balance as of 12/2001. It also has a notation in the status that $1083 was written off, but $824 past due as of 12/2001.

Providian is re-reporting it as charge-off every month since April of 2000... which effectively changes the last activity date to 12/2001.

I'd like to get it settled and get it off my report, but I'm not sure the best method of how to handle this.

Dispute it with CRAs immediately. many are reporting success (myself included) with getting it removed simply by disputing with CRAs.

Providian is in a state of disarray right now.

If you owe it and it is your debt the best way to get it resolved is to work out payment arrangements,

Do as suggested above. Dispute it with the credit bureaus asap.

First, dispute it. If it comes back verified, you might talk to them about payment for deletion. However, I already went down that road with them and they will not work with you.

When an account is charged-off, is it supposed to show a balance of whatever was charged-off, or a balance of zero?

Balance should be $0. Usually they will list the amount charged off in the charge-off statement.

I'm looking at my gf's TU file, she has a charge-off which says" status as of <date> : charged off as bad debt. Next to Balance, Most owed, and past due, are the same dollar amounts. Is this being listed correctly?

No, balance should be $0. It was charged off.

Ok I attempted online deletion with Experian... they are telling me they've already verified it once (Nov '01) and since the creditor verified, they won't reinvestigate unless I mail them the info.

With Equifax, I now have it in dispute... along with two collections (Gulf state... ugh, and Portfolio Recovery).

I'll see what happens... thanks for help

    They verified...

Any idea how I should approach a pay for delete conversation with them?

Anyone had success going this route?

    Thanks

Don't bother. I tried for about a year (several conversations) to get Providian to delete to no avail.

Will they agree to delete the lates at least? I originally was going to approach the collection agency, but it appears Providian has the account back in their hands... their cust svc stunk when I had the card active too...

I really want to clean this one up as it's the biggest of my chargeoffs

    Thx

Good luck with them, I asked for verification of a chargeoff, they sent me everything and I mean everything related to the account, about a week after that they sent it to a collection agency so now I have to deal with that.
