I paid off a charge off account in end of June to get my mortgage. I had to pay the bal showing for this which was 5611. No sooner did I pay off the bal, I get a letter from a collection agency say I owe them
7,279. I did not respond to the letter, since I paid the bal owed. Then they sent us a letter saying that they saw that we applied for credit of some kind, I have looked on my reports and there was no inquiry done by the collection company, so I guess the orginal creditor told them. So then we now get a letter saying we owed 1,668, and they have the orginal creditor listed, but with a different account number.

The bal that they have has never showed up on any of the three CRA's, so I don't know where they have a right to do this.

I am going to send them a letter to validate this, but what if they come but and tell me it is mine.
What do I do after that.
I am willing to go to court with this agency, If I have to.

    Thank you

Going to fight this one till the end!

I am assuming you paid the original creditor. If that is the case your first course of action should be to send them the nutcase ASAP. You can also send the validation letter to the collection agency at the same time. The only reason I would do this is to prevent them from putting the account on your credit reports, therby cutting them off from that action and buying you time to let the nutcase have it's effect on the OC.
