Help with stratigies for Chrysler

Now that I think I'm well on my way to getting the settlement and the open collection off my credit reports I'm moving on. My new worst TL is Chrysler Financial. This is an auto loan that was paid off very recently (last week). It's reporting with 28, 29, or 30 times 30 days past due (depending on which report is pulled). Since this was a 72 month loan, obviously it's a bad thing when nearly half the payments were 30 days late, so I want to clear this up if at all possible.

As a bit of background, I don't have any records of when my payments were made, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was late that many times. Frankly, what's reporting is a bit in my favor because I know i was 60+ several times and 90+ at least once.

The interesting thing is this... Because I paid off the account so recently it wasn't showing up as having been paid off on my reports. I asked Chrysler if they could fax me proof that it was paid off and the rep I spoke with said that the only thing she could fax at this point was a 'credit reference' form which would show a 0 account balance. When I got it I discovered that not only does the credit reference form show a 0 account balance, but it shows the total credit extended and the number of late payments. Here is where it gets interesting... According to this form I was 30 days late 23 times (and 60 and 90 days late 0 times). What I'm wondering is how can they show this while they report to the credit bureaus that I was 28, 29, or 30 days late. Also, as a side note, the page from Chrylser shows the total credit extended was about $23,000 while all of my credit reports show about $17,000.

Since I'm looking for a mortgage right away I'm wondering what the best short term solution is. I figure I could try to validate with the CRA's and if they come back saying the info is correct and I have the paper from chrysler that says 23 lates then I could serve them, but obviously this would take a while.

I also considered sending a copy of the fax from chrysler to the CRA's telling them that what they have listed can't possibly be correct, but I'm afraid that they'll just update their records to show 23 times 30 days late. Obviously that would be better than 30, but it's still not good, plus it puts proof of 23 lates in their hands.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I should do here?

    Thanks much,
    Brett

Not sure how you paid, but any chance you still have copies of the checks?

I may have them, or if not I should be able to get a record of payment from my bank, but the point is that what's being reported is probably at least close to correct. I did pay late much of the time. I am hoping that I can get them to delete the account history somehow.

    Thanks,
    Brett

I would go ahead and dispute w/ the CRAs-chances are you will get 3 different results. Also, how recent are the lates? Are these >2 years old?

Yeah, I guess disputing with the CRA's is the first step. ::sigh:: I was hoping I could do something that would fix it right away, but the more I think about it the more I realize that there is no quick fix.

In answer to your question, the majority are >2 years old, but there are probably 6 or 7 within the past two years. The most recent being December of '02.

    Thanks,
    Brett

Sending this would be like confessing to 5 murders instead of 16.

I disputed my Chrs Fin account since there were a couple of lates on them... all 3 CRA ended up updating the TL to never late! Same result on my wifes 3 reports which listed the same tradeline.

I'm a little concerned that they may pop back up at some point, but they haven't in the last 2 mos...

That's great news for me. I hope it works out as well on my reports. Out of curiosity, was the account paid off when you disputed it, and if so, how long ago had it been paid off?

    Thanks much,
    Brett

One other thing to keep in mind is that you might try being VERY specific in your CRA disputes --

"I was not 30 days late 48 times (or whatever the CRA happens to be reporting.)"

A wise poster once enlightened us that theoretically the CRA has to then go to the OC and ask 'was this person 30 days late 48 times?'

And if the OC has you on their books as being 30 days late 28 or 47 or 58 times, then they have to answer "no" to the CRA's question.

And then the lates will have to be removed.

Its better to be specific on the dispute because if you say just "I was never late" and the CRA asks "were they ever late" and the OC answers "yes" then you really haven't made any progress.

Oh - that is very interesting! I will have to remember that for next time!
