    George,

Download the DRtcp tweak tool and then do the tweak test.. it'll recommend what areas you need to adjust.... You're scores aren't bad, You're upload could use some adjustments.... I'm installing DSL in a business today, they rarely use the Internet 56K, only check email...But i guess $$$$$ for me.

Be careful running the speed test or any of the other tweak test from work.... You don't want a ping to be detected by your Lan Admin.......

True or False: cable connections are better suited to single-family homes, which have their own outside cable boxes, whereas DSL services provide consistently faster connections for townhouses or apartment complexes, since those units would have to share cable boxes. I've been shopping around for high-speed services, and this is what I heard...

WOW! I just logged in and was shocked to see the activity under this topic. I contacted my cable company (I have cable and Direct TV) and unfortunately, cable Internet access will not be available until June - they're looking for a new provider.

I've decided to give DSL a go. Now, which provider? So, far, both AOL and BellSouth can service my area. Also, someone mentioned a free static IP address. How important is it to have?

I have the Hughes Direcway satellite dish (Earthlink as ISP). I can't get dsl or cable. It flies....

I also found "dr.tcp" from www.dslreports.com and a satellite guru on their board. When properly tweaked I've been getting killer download speeds.

dslreports speed tests from different days:
    direcpc 2018/75
    direcpc 1616/42
    direcpc 1594/54
    direcpc 1168/31

    CardKid,

I'd run far away from AOL DSL.....I've serviced many of systems that either currently have it or Had it. Bellsouth is good also they have a lot of router issues, but for the most part are ok. DirectV is the way to go.. If you want ease and easy setup.. I mentioned before a static ip address. They offer it standard with your service.

If you email me we can go in depth about the Static IP and any other Networking stuff. I didnt want to bogg down the thread with my ranting or piss anyone off who doesn't see it being realative... but if you got to this link below it'll serve more than eneough info to steer you in the right direction.. It's a comparison and will also answer all of your questions..

    http://www.directvdsl.com/why/compare.asp

Go to www.dslreports.com and review other reviews about AOL DSL and Bellsouth and DirectV for that matter..

    BackSpace,

The story about the Direct TV DSL at the DSL Reports site was an eye-opener. Evanstra really blasted Direct TV.

    Pat,

What do you pay per month for this service?

Which is the fastest and most reliable, DirectWay Wireless Internet or DSL via BellSouth?

Directway is basically for people who can't get DSL or Cable. It's MUCH slower than both technologies.

Granted if one lives in the country it's the best way to go.

It's $70... Kind of steep, but it beats the hell out of 56k dialup...

This is not true. Look at my connection speeds above. Granted it isn't for gaming, the latency to go 45,000 miles and back kills your ping time. But for overall throughput I'm as fast or faster than dsl/cable. Also upload speeds are slow, but I don't do much up :)

Are you using the 2 way communications Sattelite because your post says Direct PC. Now I know those have killer download speeds. This two way dish being sold is suppost to only have about 400k downloading speed.

I originally said Direcway (the 2 way dish) which is what I have.

The direcpc reference came from my domain when I did the dslreports speed test and clipped and pasted it in the above post...

They do offer it as 400 down / 128 up, but I've been averaging around 1500kbs (after tweaking).

I don't recommend it over dsl or cable, but if you can't get them, this isn't too bad :)

    Test running.........
    ** Speed 1318(down)/73(up) kbps **
(At least 26 times faster than a 56k modem)
    Logged result.
    Finish.

I've decided to go with BellSouth's DSL package. The modem is free (rebate), the 3rd month of service is free, and Norton's Firewall software is free. The service is $44.95 per month ($5 per month discount rate) and I can expect my "Fast Access Installation Kit" by April 23rd. The countdown begins.

Will you use the Ethernet or the USB connection??? I know you're getting Norton FireWall, but the Best out there is Zone Alarm.... I'm sure others may chime in to either differ or agree.... Either way just get protected.. and Welcome to The HighSpeed HighWay... No serious knock on 56K dial up, but you'll never want to go back........

    BackSpace,

BellSouth is offering the USB modem with a 100% rebate. I have an ethernet adapter installed in my PC already. I'll try both and see which works the best.
