Mine was MILES from the office...

I had NO choice...either dial up or cable...

BUT, now I guess they have a SUB-OFFICE close enough...

CardKid,,, 8000 huh... You should get good speeds... If you already have a Ethernet card in your computer i'd use that one, although i'd ask Bellsouth if you're able. They may want you to use their product, i know they push Alcatel Modems a lot, but you should be able to just use any PCI 10/100 Ethernet Card.. What state are you in? I'd check bellsouth routing issues if there are any in your area Did you register at www.dslreports.com ???? If so you can check by your zipcode any relevant issues are read similar post of people who're in your area with the service you choose......

I've had Comcast (was @home - now there own network) for about 2 years -- and I can't go back :) I'm in a townhouse with a 4-home cable tap. However, I'm the only one on that tap that has a cable moded :) With the tweaking that I've done, I'm cranking about 1.3Mbps download and 200K upload (I don't know if anyone has recommended www.speedguide.net yet, but it's a great tweaking/testing resource).

The myth about DSL being faster than cable is really like comparing apples and oranges. The bottleneck for cable is at the tap, the bottleneck for DSL is at the Central Office (either way, there is a potential bottleneck)

By the way, Cardkid and others, I highly recommend you scrap that Norton firewall and get ZoneAlarm (even the free download version works wonders) I've done tests from multiple sites, and most can't even see my computer, much less try to get into it!

    You know what this is....

    CardKid,

Good ole Richmond County.... My birthplace!!!!! anyway....Hurricane 5 is right ZoneAlarm is the Best... I think Hurricane 5 is talking bout the Stealth Mode when no hackers or anyone can't even see your computer... so you cant get in to something you can't see.... Version 3.0.18 is AWESOME.... I love the built in popup killer and when you get a hack attempt or intrusion, it gives you the location state and a mini map of the whereabouts... Not to mention the Administrator phone number, address of the computer IP Address who tried to get you.. You may want to try this local server and see how many hops it takes you.. http://www.atl.speakeasy.net/

Thanks BackSpace. I'm looking forward to DSL and saying goodbye to jerky video @ 56k.

By the way, BellSouth charges additional if you want to have home networking. Couldn't I buy a Lynksys network and hook up all my PCs? Since the signal is "always on" there wouldn't be a problem having multiple users online at the same time if I did that. Right?

Yep Linksys router will do for you, how many other computers are you looking to network.. I wouldn't purch the extra cost of networking thru them. It's something can be done on your own,,,,, If you need help email me... I'm in Augusta from time to time, maybe when you get your system i could pay a visit to set it up for you.... When i was first starting out and would be stumped or need indepth knowledge i turned to this forum www.pcnineoneone.com it's the best out there.. Its a forum like this one where you'll get help and also find a ton of stuff on networking, reviews, products and you name it.... Take a look at them.......

I'm excited! UPS left a post-it on the door yesterday. It could only be for the delivery of my DSL modem. So, today I should cross over into the "SPEED ZONE!"

    BackSpace,

I have it all hooked up!! It's very fast. I had to install the filters on all the lines with phones (the plug-ins) to avoid the noise. Everything's quiet now. I'm going back through the posts so I can test my speed, get the firewall software, etc.

Thanks again for everyone's advice and input. Installation took less than a few minutes. I'll never go back to dial-up!

Okay. Here are my speed tests:

    Test #1

    2002-04-12 17:16:11 EST: 1029 / 217
Your download speed : 1029466 bps, or 1029 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 125.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 217983 bps, or 217 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

    Test #2

    2002-04-12 17:20:17 EST: 1235 / 215
Your download speed : 1235768 bps, or 1235 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 150.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 215517 bps, or 215 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

I ran the tests at different sites in different parts of the country. Are the results pretty good?

By the way, the modem is a SpeedStream. I've never heard of it. They suggest that I use twisted pairs over the standard phone line for greater performance.

NCGolfer....whats your email address? Do you know if this will work with ATT Broadband cable modem? Right now I get between 1.2mbs and 2mbs depending on traffic.
