I had a balance from a surgery that I was paying off. The total was $1322. I have paid off $1000 of it directly to the hospital. Today a collection showed up from NCO for the balance. I was doing great, I had used Lexington Law to clean up the rest of my credit messes but now I think I should do this one myself. Can someone point me in the direction here of how to handle this.

    THanks

Yea, send a communication in writing to Michael Barrist. Tell him therein that you intend to institute a civil action against NCO because there not marking the item as being in dispute. Dispute the tradeline with the credit reporting agencies at the same time. Within about a week or two you'll get a letter stating they are deleting the account.

    Simple as that . . .

You may want to look before you jump, if the collection notice just showed up today, most likely NCO has not reported it yet. They usually wait at least the 30 day window before reporting.

If you can afford to pay the balance off, just pay it, and I am sure there will be no reporting on your credit reports. You may want to speak with the hospital as well, they may pull back the collection notice, and work out a continued payment plan.

If you want to be sure, then pull your credit reports to see if NCO has reported it yet.

I take the term "collection showed up" to mean that it appeared on their credit reports. If I'm wrong, the OP may please correct me.

Your suggestions are solid except for when dealing with NCO. I will give the OP $100.00 if my suggestion doesn't do exactly what I earlier prescribed!

    Anyone up for a bet?
