    In an emergency situation, if you take someone to the hospital and the hospital asks you to sign papers (if the patient cannot either because of his/her physical condition or because he/she is a minor), most of us will, under the assumption that this is required in order to begin treatment.

    I know someone who did just this and is now receiving a hospital bill for a family member's care.

    In an emergency situation (where duress is present among family members who were too upset to read the fine print, and nobody explained to them that by signing they were obligated to pay) is this still considered a valid contract?
