All that accomplishes is it thins your wallet and you still have the bad marks on your credit reports.

I think your approach is good, knock off the smaller ones entirely. But, contact them and say that you'll pay them entirely off for deletion of the tradeline, so you don't take the negative hit anyway. They'll give you a ration that they can't do that, but that is not true. No fixing of the tradeline, no money. Be firm.
I can say for sure what a creditor can do with removals . I disputed a 30 days later with Target , hoping they would not have records of it . They sent me a nice letter saying they were removing the 30 days and would do so for all 3 CRA's . Checked my credit and they held up to thier word If they can delete it like that , anyone can . They even said they looked forward to doing business with me again . I closed the account after my wife screwed up and sent the pay late and then paid off the $700 owed in 3 months time . I guess it was easier for them to do as I had the account for over 3 years and it was the only 30 days late I ever had .
