I have the bills for some of my credit cards go to my office and others sent to my home. I tried to buy something online recently, using one of the "office" cards, and asking the item to be sent to my home. It was rejected immediately, saying my address for shipping (home) did not match the address on the credit card (office). Nothing has shown up as an inquiry on any of my reports. So, where do they get this information? There must be a data base somewhere. Are all credit cards in it?
You should be able to SHIP to "HOME" or "WORK" using either of your cards... BILLING ADDRESS (HOME) XXXX WHITTIER BLVD WHITTIER CA 90603 SHIPPING ADDRESS (WORK) XXXXX BEACH BLVD LA HABRA CA 90631 I had $500+ computer STUFF shipped to work!!! NO QUESTIONS other than both addresses and both phone numbers...
George: I agree that I "should" be able to ship to home or work. But, they won't ship to my home if I use the credit card with my work billing address. There must be some type of data base somewhere because the rejection was immmediate.
It may be because some merchants, such as telephone order merchants, are set up for name/address verification. It's kind of a security feature since MO/TO merchants have such a higher chance of fraud. Chances are the merchant did this and the address didn't match. When we do chargebacks we can see if merchants did address verifications before receiving authoriztions. Hope this helps. This is why you wouldn't see anything on your inquiries. HeatherB
Of course there is a database. The credit card companies maintain it. I've written the store software for many web sites, and this is a common requirement, espcially for online orders. The merchant collects the credit card information, including the address. This information in then sent to the credit card processing company. They check their database to make sure the funds are available, and the address matches. If the address does not match, they will often decline. Some merchants are required to check this as part of the their credit card acceptance agreement. Remember, if you then dispute the charge, the merchant, not the CC company, takes the hit. And to make things worse, the merchant gets fined, and of they have too many disputes, they loose their CC contract. So the merchant is very motivated to make sure that when they accept a CC payment, that everything is on the up-and-up. The database is centralized. The issing banks send data to the database, such as STAR and Cirrus, either daily or live updates.
Happens to me all the time. You can call your credit card issuer and have an alternate "ship to", (not billing address) added to your account so this will not happen. Once you do, they will authorize packages to be delivered to your work address without rejecting the sale...it is an added security against Internet & Mail Order Fraud. -Peace, Dave
