I'm off the CC's for a while and on to utilities bills. Namely power bills. I sold my house and had a cut off date for the day the new owner took over and called to put in their name (which is pretty common where I live). They never called to connect and left the service in my name until it was turned off for non payment. The SOL is up and my question is: can they deny me service until it is paid or just make me put up a large deposit? I'm sure it was turned over to collections along with the rest of my "National Dept" so I haven't tried to get service since my credit NIGHTMARE started. While I'm on the subject, does utility bills come under open ended or written contracts.Had service with them for more than 20yrs and just kept transfering service by phone and because of excellent payment history I had no deposits. Starting to feel like the NewBe I am again!! Lin
you shouldn't be liable for any debt incurred after the cut-off date. i had that happen to me once...we moved and the landlord had the bill reopened in our name...i called and fought it and they billed after that date to the correct party. remember - SOL only pertains to lawsuits...not the amount of time they can collect. how long has it been? have you sent a validation letter? once you know the bill after the cutoff date, you should dispute that with the company...
Re: Re: How does SOL effect utitility bill Thanks for the reply Jenz, It's been over 5ys. I had the cut off ordered over the phone so I have nothing in writing except the date of sale. I found out from a neighbor (not the power co) months after the fact and at that point I had bigger things on my plate . I haven't contacted the power co and they haven't contacted me but I'm afraid theres a bill still outstanding. Wanted to have some answers before I persue trying to re establish service with them. Thanks, Lin
Re: Re: Re: How does SOL effect ut Hi, I really doubt that they will still have a record of you. Honestly, just call them and set up service as if you never had service with them before. I will be shocked if anything comes up when setting up the new service. Let us know. I'm curious to know what happens. Jane

Re: Re: Re: Re: How does SOL effect ut Thanks, I'll do that. It's funny you can do a million good things in you life and one bad thing and guess which one everyone remembers. There will probably be a record of it somewhere 20yrs from now thanks to the age of computers! Lin
Lin, I just dealt with this. The utilities bill was in my name when I moved from CO to TX. I told my roomie to call and get it changed over into his name which he never did. I call PS and let them know I wanted the bill switched, gave him my roomies name and made sure I would not be billed anymore. I asked what would happen if he did not call to switch and he said it would be put into our landlords name since he owned the house (and he could take care of getting on the tenants to get it in their name and/or get the cash from them). So if there WAS an issue, I would think it would be on the people who bought it from you and if there IS an issue you can show the date of sale papers. I agree with what everyone else has told you too.
Thanks, You might want to see my last post. After reading the USCC don't think they'll be calling again. I'm so grateful I found this site! Lin
