Re: Re: Re: How many cards do you have? Wouldn't a more significent question be, "What is your Credit Line?" You could have 30 credit cards with a very small credit line, but 1 or 2 with a very large CL which I would think would be better. Back in the 80's I had one card & I don't know what the Credit Line was, but I did charge up to $100,000 in one month on that card.
Yeah really! office machines? You could have at least lied and said you took a trip around the world or something exotic like that!! lol Will that's great ol boy! Dh accepted his and it said the card would be here in a few days....yeah right we'll see. It didn't say, "processing" or "approved" or anything normal. hm...anyone get that???
OK, since a lot of mine are in the "sock drawer" I'll try this from memory-- Citibank MasterCard AT&T MasterCard First USA United Visa First USA Officer's Club MasterCard B of A USAirways Visa B of A unsecured line of credit Sears MasterCard Wal*Mart JC Penneys Hecht's Robinson's May Foleys Belk Lord & Taylor Macys Burdine's Dillards Bloomingdale (never used) Fashion Bug Citgo Shell Mobil Only Citibank, AT&T and B of A line of credit have balances, all under 8%. I'll probably close some, but I really like the store cards for extra % off, etc. I've already closed a Chase card, an MBNA card, a Chase unsecured line of credit, another B of A card, a Cap One card, and a few others I can't remember. If I've forgotten any, I haven't used them for a while and should probably close them.
Not move, travel. Now they let you use the cards at the other stores, but that's only a year or so old. Before you had to have the specific store card for where you were shopping. And you always get the extra discount when you open an account. So--when I traveled to Texas (Austin) I went to Foley's and opened an account. I later used it in Denver. Then I spent almost 15 months traveling back and forth to California, so I opened the Robinson's May account. I called to see if they'd combine, but they won't. And they also said if it's Customer Appreciation Days at one store and you get an extra discount for using your store card, only that store card applies, not the others. Since you can now use them at all stores, I just buy a few things at Hecht's and use RM or Foley's occasionally. That keeps them active, and no matter where I am, I can take advantage of their sales!
Hedwig, That sounds like a good system. Some people warn about too many retail cards, and may be right, but I know they can be a huge convenience, with lots of benefits to boot.
That's why I keep most of mine. And when I was much deeper in debt and having a lot of troubles, I carried balances on most of the Visa and MC accounts (there were different ones then, a lot of them long since gone). If I used a gas card or a store card, I tried to make myself pay it off when I got it. That reduced the interest. Even if I didn't pay it all off, I got that first month with no interest, so overall I was still better. The exception was Montgomery Ward. They kept giving me CL increases. I had old cars, and used Wards for repairs. That card was almost maxed at $10K, mostly appliances and car repairs. When Wards closed, they converted it to Wal*Mart. When I went to the credit union last year for my car loan, the loan officer said she had never seen anyone with a $10K Wal*Mart limit. Of course, she could see that it was paid off (or showed a low balance if I had charged something the month before). She asked how anyone could spend $10K at Wal*Mart, so I explained that it was previously at Wards for appliances and stuff, then she understood.
I "MAXED" out WAL*MART store card (0%)...but I had SEARS store card EMPTY... I GOT A REASON CODE ON PROBABLY EQUIFAX..."EXCESSIVE BALANCE TO CREDIT LIMIT ON STORE CARDS" or some such words... I WAS AT 30% MAX!!! "EXTRA" store cards would have HELPED...
Did they mean overall store cards, or just that you had excessive balances on one? If they lump them together, I should never have "excessive balances" on store cards!
