How should I proceed with this?

I received a letter from Citibank today offering to settle an old account of mine The letter stated in light of the upcoming tax season, they are offering me a discount to settle in full. Also stated that unless I notified the office within 30 days to dispute the validity, they would assume it was valid, and would send me verification of the debtor or obtain a copy of a judgment and mail me a copy of verification. That if I made a written request within 30 days after receiving this notice, they would provide me with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor.
The amount they claim I owe is appro. $1,500 more than I actually owe. Any opinions on how to handle this? Should I ignore it, get a copy of my credit report, then dispute it, or what? I don't want to respond and "renew" the debt.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure this is from CITI?
The letter sounds more like something a Collection agency would send rather than what an Orignal creditor sends.

yes, you are right. The letter was from a collection agency called Northland. Should I reply to them or would you contact CITI directly with an offer to settle the debt?? I want it off my credit report as soon as possible and don't want to do anything to cause it to re-new on my credit report for another 7 years.
    Thanks!

I wouldnt settle without a delete letter in your hand from them. Its the only leverage you have with them.
Is it reported by Citi or Northland on your reports?
Do what you think is right, I would want to pay too, but not for more than I owed in the first place, less late fee and interest. If you pay, get something worthwhile in return..deletions from your CR's.

    Hope this helps
