does it make a difference how I close an account, either using
the cc's companies 800 number of sending them a letter. If
I use the 800 number will they close the account and still
say "account closed by consumer/customer"? or is it better if
I just send them a letter explaining what they should do and
    include the cards?

My wife closed an account (CHASE), we thought...taped the cut in half card to the bottom of the letter. Told them to close the account. Report the account as "ACCOUNT CLOSED BY CONSUMER"/ BALANCE $0/ NEVER LATE.
    WE SENT IT CERTIFIED R/R...

WE KEPT ON GETTING STATEMENTS...So we called, they said it is still open..."DO YOU WANT IT CLOSED"???
    "WHAT LETTER"???

SO CHASE WON'T ACCEPT A SIGNED LETTER WITH CARD ATTACHED...ALMOST EVERY OTHER CARD WE HAVE CLOSED HAS ACCEPTED A SIGNED LETTER...GO FIGURE.

It's very simple, don't waste your time. Just call them right now and request to close your account!.

I just like to send the letter for proof (I save a copy for me)...but if they trash the letter without reading it...I guess it is a waste of time!!!
